Can anyone read this occupation?

Am trying to read the following occupation, which is given in the 1861 census for Arthur Matthison. He was supposed to be a corn merchant before building the Beaumont arms pub in Hamstead in the mid 1850s. , but this seems to read letter xxxx, which doesn't seem to be anything to do with a pub or corn, nor is he at the pub, though he is in hamstead, so I assume he is the same one

It could be Letter Carver. It would be a skilled proffesion wether in wood, stone or metal. If he bulit a pub all would have been useful.

Sorry Wendy, I agree with dipseydiva; I think it is letter carrier.
I have a corn merchant in Essex who for three previous census returns had been a coffee-shop owner in West Ham, so some occupations do seem a bit unrelated over the years!

In the Royal Mail, the official name changed from "letter carrier" to "postman" in 1883,[SUP][[/SUP]and "postwoman" has also been used for many years.

The 1891 London Census Transcription lists Letter Carrier. It corresponds not suprisingly to: Postman.

Those were the days. Australia Post has recently increased the charge for a letter to $1,minimum within Aust. an increase of 30% with delivery in 4 days. Should you choose you can pay an additional 50cents (thus making the increase to over 50%) and have delivery in 2 days.
