Caffery/Caffrey/Clarke/Butterfield

I am researching my family tree in the Birmingham area. My grandmother was Alice Caffery (nee Clarke), she was born in Birmingham in 1907 and died in Gloucestershire in 1992, she was married to Hugh Caffery born in Skinner Lane in 1902 and died in 1963. They had two children Maureen and John. John was my father and died in 1987 age 43.

I would love to know if anyone remembers the family or has any information that could be useful to me. I have looked on the records and found the marriage of Alice and Hugh and have sent for the certificate so I hopefully will have more information on the Clarke side once that arrives.

I have Hugh's birth certificate and his mother and father were Hugh and Elizabeth Caffery (nee Butterfield). I have found their marriage but spelt Hugh Caffrey - surely there wouldn't have been a Hugh Caffery and another Hugh Caffrey marrying an Elizabeth Butterfield in Birmingham!

If the spelling has changed over the years then that would answer the question as to why I couldn't find any information on the census, I have however found the family of Edward Caffrey from Park Lane who had a son Hugh.

Looking forward to any replies.

Hugh son 22 brushmaker born Birmingham
Jessie dau 18 do do
Alice dau 16 do do
Edward son 13 errand boy do
Thomas son 9 do
John son 6 do
Elizabeth dau 2 do

I looked at the marriage of Hugh and Elizabeth Butterfield, I can't think there would be two with those names, it was in the June quarter of 1901. The 1901 census was taken 31st March, and I would expect to find Elizabeth, but no luck so far.

Hi thanks for your replies, Les I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters as he died in 1963 before I was born and I know very little. From what I understand from the records his father (also Hugh) died in 1904 just 2 years after my grandfather was born so possibly he was an only child. I am only at the very early stages of research on this side of the family but it would be great if there was a connection. I will keep working on it. Do you know who their parents were or where they lived?

Di - thanks for your info - I believe Edward Caffrey/Caffery may be my gr gr grandfather. I couldn't find Elizabeth Butterfield on the 1901 census however I did find her 10 years earlier when she was just 10 years old. Her father was Richard Butterfield and her mother Mary Ann Parkes.

Hi I've just had a another look for Elizabeth in 1901 and I think I have probably found her - I have found Betsy Butterfield born 1881 living as a boarder in Bradford Street. She was living with the Morris family and was a spoon polisher. I was wondering if anyone could have a look at the census record for me, something has been written over the entry and I can't make it out any ideas?

Here is an extract for that address.
Written over 'Spoon Polisher' is 'OW 10/7'.
I think this is a later reconciliation of occupation, see the one below has 'Bolt' written over 'Screw Trade'.
'OW 10/7'?
Out Worker? or some code by which unusual occupations are grouped together when counting the numbers of 'who does what' across the whole census.

Thanks Lloyd for attaching that image, I couldn't figure out how to do it. I agree that this was probably written on after to group occupations together. They didn't sound very interesting jobs did they?
