It wasn't Brunell was it I know we think it was a lady but Brunell does ring a bell - perhaps it's the wrong bell!!

Carol, I spoke to my friend Margaret Wassall who is a lot younger than me - 60 this year - and it would seem that the Houses were re-named after my time, as Margaret remembers Keller and Curie. I'm still trying to find anyone who remembers the fourth house in my time early 1950s

do remember Keller and Curie and i am sure the other 2 were Fry and
Nightingale
I know Margaret Wassall she was in my class,could you ask her if you don`t mind if she remembers Carol Martin as i was then.

Hi Carol, I will ask Margaret if she remembers you next time we speak. I don't know if you are still in the Birmingham area, if so you might like to come to our Reunion at the Barn on Tuesday, 7th July 2009 from 7 p.m. onwards. Margaret always comes.

Well l'm still ratteling my brains on the 4th house at Burlington st snr girls sch, thats when l attended...l left dec 1950....could it have been Austin..Jane Austin....it seems to ring a bell to me ...brenda
 
My Mum, Ivy Haywood, attended Burlington Street School 1928 to 1938. She remembers in the Senior school, Head Mistress Miss Tomlinson, teachers Miss Procter, Miss James, Miss Brian?, Miss Cochrane and Miss Weaver. Pupils, Ivy Mail? Male?, Gladys Harvey, Pauline Phillips, Jessie Baker, Beatrice Coxson. Anybody out there still. Mum would love to know.
 
I am 65 so at the school after your mom, there was a Miss James there then, if I remember rightly she was not too tall but quite strict, I think you used to have to go through her classroom to get to Mr.Burgess the headmasters office.
 
I also started at Burlington Street in 1964, I was in Mrs Wilcox class. Don't remember any of the names you mentioned, but here is a school photo, maybe you recognise some of the faces. I am on the back row left of Mrs Wilcox shoulder.View attachment 30766
 
Can anybody date this photo for me from Burlington Street? I think either my uncle is on there (but not sure) and he was born in 1916 or my mum born 1920, so would date it as either 1922 or 1926

Any help greatly appreciated, John
 
As you all know by now Burlington St sch was my school enrolled in 1939 left 1950 other than being evacated for twoyears when l attended Pepworth school can honestly say l enjoyed school never wanted to leave...Brenda
 
The other Burlington street school on the opposite of the road and lower down just past Talford street

like Sylvia said about her son Michael..maybe you were in the January intake...is your birthday earlier in the year?
I know a couple of faces on your photo, [Raymond Joyce, and is it Michael Cox, bottom right, by any chance?], but I am not there
 
Lovely to see these school photos. John it was nice to see the photo of Mr. Eastwood in photo 3, on post 10. I remember when he and Mr. Barker returned to the school after serving in WW2, I think he spent his whole career at Burlington Street, and he was renowned for throwing chalk at chattering pupils, honed from many years practice.

On post 26, School Road, Moseley, the pupils are so well dressed for the period, I suspect they are the children of professional fathers.
 
Like you sylvia it was nice to see burlington st school pictures with Mr Eastwood and Mr Barker in them..Mr Eastwood was my teacher l feared him and liked him all at once but he was a good teacher... he not on threw chalk if anyone was talking other things came sailing threw the air what ever was close at hand board eraser etc....always liked Mr Barker he has a quieter approach.....when l went to Burlington st sch we never had class pictures l guess that was because of the war and availability of film....so being as l left dec 1950 we have few pictures of memories.

My husband's great great aunt was Hannah Busby, born in 1880, who was a teacher at Burlington Street school.
There have been a couple of lovely posts made on this site about her:-

"Miss Busby had retired by the time I started school but she taught my sisters and brother and lived with her sister in Talford Street, the first house past the corner of Upper Webster and Talford Streets, she always spoke kindly to us children whether she had taught us or not".

"How l remember Burlington St School, happy days, l always enjoyed school never wanted to leave. l started in 1940 and left in 1950 Miss Busby was my first teacher such a dear she was".

Does anyone have any more information about or photos of her?

LooneyLin...Miss Busby was a favourite to all of us kids...she was such a dear also her sister can'nt really remember if l had her as a teacher l started Burlington st infants around 1940 but was'nt there very long before my brother and l were evacuated...my brother would have lessons at their house in Talford street....l.m sure l must have been in her class as l remember she would pass out biscuits at milk time we also had green chequered napkins, to eat off ...trying to make ladies and gents out of us....miss busby knew us all by name and always had a smile for everyone ....Brenda

thanks for clearing up that mystery for me...yes, your Michael may have been in the year above...although the more I think about it, the more familiar his name seems...
as you say, he and others were friendly, and played out with, Lynne Storer, as I did, so perhaps we knew one another outside of school classes.

Can anyone tell me when did Burlington st school closed down,i know my 2 sisters were sent to Lozells school in the middle 60`s ,did the whole school close down then.
I have tried to find out but not had any luck

hi carol i was also there around that time..i went to lozells girls but we used burlington st school for certain lessons...the right hand side as you come down from newtown row is still there...i was down there a few months ago taking photos and boy did it bring back memories...i even went into my old playground..i did start a thread for it and posted pics...

Hi Lyn i just wondered why girls were sent to Lozells in the 60`s i assumed the school closed then according to Aston lad it closed down in 1984 shame it was pulled down as it was a really nice building.The one over the road i know is still there we done pottery and needlework there we did have a class there as well Miss Smith was our teacher then.
Do they use this building for anything now?
