Can anyone tell me how i can find out where my Greatgrand father is
buried,Joseph Harper died in 1888.He may have been living in Soho Road
Handsworth.
Thankyou
Carol

If he was living in Handsworth when he died it would probably be Handsworth Cemetery. I would try there first. It's a good idea to get a death certificate as this should give you his address when he passed away.:)

Hiya Carol
it wont be Handsworth cos they only opened in 1909 ..think you will maybe be looking for a churchyard here

Hi Maggie,
Thankyou for telling me about Handsworth Cemetary,do you know which
one would be most likely.
Thankyou
Carol

hi carol and maggs
surely i thought it would have been witton cem ;
would have been the nearest
oh by the way carol i nticed you have a research for hagan
wher is your hagan coming from ?.
have a nice day to the both of you .
best wishes astonian ..

Carol if he had money and was buried in a churchyard then i think St Michaels would be the nearest depending on what part of Soho Road he was living in..but that is only if it was a churchyard:):)
if it was a cemetery this link might help https://www.bham.de/index_cemeteries.html

Ooops sorry for the miss information good job Maggie is awake!!:) I will check Key Hill for you. :)

It won't be St Michael's Church as it had no burial ground, but St Mary's was open until 1933. Failing that, it could be Witton, but it also could be either Key Hill as Wendy has suggested, or Warstone Lane.

Please can anyone help,i have been trying to find where my g.grandparents and other members of my family might be buried. My g.grandmother was at Main St Sparkbrook when she died in 1929,i have her death certificate.Others died 1909,1911,and between 1920-29.in Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook. I have been to the Library and searched Handsworth and Witton rolls to no avail, alot of Witton roll for those dates is illegibile,i dont want to pay for searches unless i have to,has anyone had any joy in this area, thanks Angela

I would suggest St James's Church for this. I don't think St Michael's had burial spaces (a lot of later churches did not), so St James might be the best bet. Some burials are on line - I found them once by just Googling St James Church, Handsworth

Lodge Hill might be the best bet for you. It's certainly the nearest to Sparkbrook. If you have a definitive date, there is likely to be no charge, but I can't promise. The charge is quite outrageous if they have to search £19 per half hour. (I have never had to pay, I have almost always had a full date).

If not at Lodge Hill, the next best thing would to be to find all local churches that had burial space available at that time. Offhand I don't have the e-mail, but Google Lodge Hil Cemetery and it will come up quickly.

Carol

Hi Carolann

If you are still looking, i'll do a look up next time i am at the Central library. Witton, St.Mary's Handsworth, and St.James, Handsworth will be the places i will look at.

Regards

Steve

Angela, after looking at Sparkhill in my A-Z on after speaking to you on saturday, I think Brandwood, as you suggested, is probably the nearest, and Steve seems to agree. That side of Birmingham is not somewhere I am terribly familiar with these days, yet I was born over that side. I have already sent an e-mail to someone connected with Brandwood Friends, to see how one goes about getting information, as Brandwood is now closed to new burials. I am not sure if anyone is still in the office, but wil make further enquiries tomorrow. Shortie

Thanks for the info Steve and Shortie,i have e.mailed Brandwood End and Lodge Hill today, lets hope they come up with something.Angela.
