Aint got time to look through the list But Slade and the various pre slade bands the in betweens the n betweens the vendors Steve Brett & the Mavericks The Phantoms/ Memphis Cutouts & ambrose Slade played these venues:

THIS INFORMATION IS NOT TO BE USED ANYWHERE ELSE AND COMES FROM SLADE HISTORIAN CHRIS SELBY ALONG WITH MYSELF & MANY OTHER SOURCES

Edited due the reply below if you wanna rip information off other web sites that's fine (as in Brumbeat) but just coz you aint gained permission off me and your reaction to remove the brumbeat Slade info from your forum.

THE REASONS FOR THE REFUSAL TO PUBLISH THIS LIST OF SLADE GIGS WAS MADE CLEAR IN MY REPLY TO YOU

My favourite pop group venue in the 60's was the Hen & Chickens at Langley. Any photos?:) Graham.

gary jordan,

here is my forum's profile page for

Ambrose Slade

I would ask your permission to post this
most informative list on our forum,
or even better for you to join, and make it possible for yourself,
and your friends to contribute on our forum,
it would be greatly appreciated
,

Sorry no can do, this is privy slade information, and we do not want it displayed all over the net, one day this will appear in a special Slade book, which would be our & the bands copyright, however we are prepared to let you edit the list and only display any venues not on your list.

Although not of an age and not personally remembered I believe the bull on the Coventry road, near where the bill and bull stands today was a popular venue, a guy I used to work with remembered seeing Fleetwood Mac their amongst others, also Birmingham Bingley Hall seems to be missing off the list I know this was used in the 80's so expect it was used in the 60's.

IMO I thought any publicity and memories of a band were worth sharing!
Perhaps if it is a problem , I should take Slade out of my Forum?

I may have missed it but I did'nt notice Digbeth Civic Hall listed as a venue ,it was a midweek venue I rmember seeing The Move there in the sixties. I also used to go to the allnighters at the Midnight City ,and saw some gerat bands there ,Cream , The Who and Family to name a few. The Midnight City was only open for a few months and was booking bands along the same lines as Mothers , the problem was that it didn't have a drinks licence ,although the owner or his dad owned The Moat House which was directley above it. It seems that the club had a reputed drugs problem and the police took to waiting until the headline band opened up and raided the place ,this soon led to closure ,pity . regards Bernie

Hi Bernie,
It is in the list,
and here's our Forum profile of it.

Also thanks for reminding us where Midnight City was,
I went there a couple of times.

Sorry Ethan you are doing afine job of what must be a mammoth task ,but while my memory ,unlike my sight , is working I wondered if anyone else went to the blues festivals held at Town Hall annually . I went to two around 1965 67 . The first headlined by Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee the second by Lightening Hopkins and included a host of talent Albert King , Etta James , Big Bill Bronsby , Sonny Boy Williamson . Little Walter etc ,great shows regards Bernie

I am not sure where to post this as I don't know where it was. The cutting is from The Birmingham Weekly Post 1952.

Hi Wendy,

I played there in bands,
and it is near Kenilworth.
Many top bands played in the ballroom ,
and also in the cellar type bar underneath.

Bernie,

I've only just seen this post! I saw Cream and The Who at Midnight City, and couldn't hear for about a week afterwards! You're dead right about the lack of drinks licence - we used to slip a half bottle of Bell's into a pocket, but I recall a lot of drinking on the pavement outside. I can't remember being there when it was raided, but, as they say, if you can remember the 1960's, you weren't there!

In a simliar vein, I remember staying with a friend in Hayes, Middlesex, about 1969, and he suggested we go down to some pub where they had bands. Typical enormous London estate-type boozer, but the band that night was 'only' Derek And The Dominoes, before it was generally realised that 'Derek was Eric' - Clapton, that is. What a night. The 'Layla' album is my most-played CD, having worn out my vinyl copy ages ago.

Regards,

Big Gee

Thanks for the info Ethan I had no idea where it was but it was such a lovely advert. I would have loved to have seen you play.........wouldn't it be nice to go there now!:)

Didn't see the CAT (now University of Aston) on that list. I saw bands there such as The Bonzo Dog Band, Brian Auger Trinity, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Steampacket (Rod Stewart and Julie Driscoll), Carl Wayne & The Vikings, and many others.

Digbeth Civic Hall was also famous for the Jug O'Punch Folk Club on Thursday nights, hosted by Ian Campbell. Rough cider, too....ye gods...

Hi Wendy:
I remember the ads in the Birmingham Mail for dances at Chesford Grange
in the l950 s and early l960 s. The last time I saw the sign for Chesford Grange was on the programme Keeping Up Appearances. Richard and Hyacinth stayed there for a weekend supposedly. The place is still going it seems but very expensive.
My apostrophes and inverted commas have decided to have a French flavour so not usable at the mo. Will get it sorted later.

Thanks Wendy,

It would be nice to go there,
and incidently, I still play and record,
so there's chance to see me yet, before it's too late lol

Bee Gee,

Here is the Unsigned City profile on
Digbeth Civic Hall

I used the Jug 'o Punch lots.

i Big Gee I think the Civic Hall promotion on Tuesdays was called the teen and twenty disc club , it used to feature some live bands and also had an audition spot for bands that wanted to work for the agent who ran it. You sound a likely customer for Henry's Blues House upstairs in the Crown Station Street ,The Bakerloo Blues Band , Champion Jack Dupree etc. Do you remember a local band , Craig , who had Carl Palmer on drums who was about 15years old at the time ,they weren't bad but he was areal talent . regards Bernie

Hi Bernie.

Henry's Blues House I do remember, but sadly I never saw Champion Jack Dupree there (or anywhere else, unfortunately). The band called Craig I don't remember. Didn't a band called The Artwoods play there regularly?

Strange how in those days I used to go to folk, blues and jazz clubs and enjoyed it all. I think I was much more open-minded back then.

Big Gee

Big Gee I am sure you are right about peoples musical interests being more varied than probably any other time , I could happily watch a jazz , blues folk or rock band then but as I got older I prefer blues which was always a slight preference from my youth . regards Bernie

Hi Bernie,

If you like blues it'd be great to see you at The Sutton Blues Collective, at the Station Pub, Sutton Coldfield. Google it for more info. Regular guests, and a jam every second Wednesday of the month.

Got to say although i,m a brummie used to have some great nights out at the Hen and Chickens on the Wolverhampton Rd in the 60s. Dek

I am researching the history of the Stockley family - West Brom, Kings Heath etc. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers the White Lion Pub, Portway which was run by members of this family in the early 1900s, before they moved to Kings Heath. This pub was demolished when the Maypole to Studley duel carriageway was built about 40 years ago. Any photos would be appreciated.
