Brown saddler

Ann Steiner

master brummie
My gr-gr-grandfather is listed as a "brown saddler" in the 1881 census. I understand what a saddler is, but have never heard the term "brown" used with it before. I looked it up on a couple different occupation sites, but all they listed were plain saddlers.

Does anyone have a clue as to what the definition might be?

Thank you.

Ann

Hello Ann,

I hope this explains the question for you.

` black saddler` was a maker of cart, gig and other saddles in black leather, as distinct from a brown saddler who made riding saddles.

Thank you Trebor, for the saddler explanation. That was the first I'd seen a distinction made in the type of saddlers in my census searches. Knowing what the terms mean now is most helpful!

Thanks again!

Ann
