hi just a question one of my ancestors Henry Brown Born middleton Birmingham in 1851 he was living with his family st mary parish birmingham and then in 1871 he was an inmate in a Birmingham work house? unless i have the wrong Henry Brown?? he was married to fanny staley:(

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

Have you been able to locate Fanny in the 1871 census? If she was living by herself it makes it possible (though not certain) that Henry in the work house is yours.

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

hi i found fanny brown living with her daughter she is 68, so i would say that henry is not her husband as he also would have been 55 .....oh well i will keep looking

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

Well, elimination is one form of confirmation. Though a frustrating one. :)

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

Hello, in 1871 the Henry in the inmate is a Tailor and looks like they have classified him as an "imbecile" which i suppose would be dementure these days

In 1861 there is a Henry Brown, married ,Tailor ,born Middleton, 1818, living with his elderly parents...maybe Henry was starting to be ill and they looked after him ?

iN 1851 Henry is living with Fanny and the children. he is a tailor. Living at Snow Hill Court house 1

In 1861 Fanny is a servant in 59 Snow Hill for a Butcher(slaughter house) and family

In 1871 Fanny is lodging in 60 Weaman Street , widow aged 59 .general servant. She could have lied about her marital status to avoid embaressment.
There is a constant difference in age and Fanny is definately from Kenilworth

There is death for a Henry Brown in dec 1871 Birmingham.
I will try to track the children

sorry if this is not helpful

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

Fanny was older than her husband Henry.
She was born in 1811 in Kenilworth.

1851 Snow hill
Henry Brown age 33 b. Middleton Warks Tailor
Fanny age 40 born Kenilworth
Fanny 4, Sarah 3,Eliza 9 months

after this it appears the marriage breaks down.

In 1861 Henry, married, a Tailor age 44 born Middleton is living with his parents Richard and Sarah in Middleton, which is near Tamworth.

1861 Fanny Brown age 48 born Kenilworth, calling herself a widow, is a servant in Snow hill.

Cannot locate the older girls but Eliza age 10 b. birmingham is living with Dinah Ward and husband William as a lodger in Stoneleigh Warks.Dinah was Staley when she married William Ward and is on the batch of baptisms as Fannys sister.

1871 Henry is in the city workhouse , a Tailor age 53 b. Middleton and
Fanny Brown, widow, age 59 b. Kenilworth is a servant in Weaman Street.

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

alberta does it say how old john and traphanna were whe they were maiired? because with the date of birth i have it makes john 12 and traphanna 14?

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

The info I gave you is taken from the IGI and they are extracts from parish registers(as opposed to some entries on IGI which are submitted and not always trustworthy).
Where did you get the info about John and Tryphenas ages? There does not appear to be any on IGI.

Re: henry brown born 1818 middleton

Before 1753 there was no lower limit to marriagable age but the Hardwicke Marriage ACt of 1753 set it at 12 years for girls and 14 years for boys and it remained like that until 1929.

Although in law it was possible to marry at these ages as late as 1929,it is recorded that in practice it very rarely happened.

I have information on Tryphana Finch if you are still interested. I am descended from her on my mothers side. Also the steeleys/stayleys from Kenilworth and the Mumfords of Kineton too.
