Brough/Moulson

skylark

Proud to be a Brummie !!
Hello folks, I could really do with some advice on where to look for the following information.. I am looking for a connection between Brough & Moulson, possibly these 2 chaps could have formed a company together ?
First sighting of Henry Moulson is on the 1841 when he is a tinplate maker, although he married in Sutton Coldfield in 1831 ( his bride was Mary Brough) by the 1851/61 he is now a silverplater. He is next found in 1871 when he is back in his native Sheffield as a silversmith. The Brough silverplaters stayed in B'ham. My question is..is there a Kellys or similar that goes back as far as 1840's to help me in my quest??

Regards,
Margaret.

Not quite what you wanted, but for your information

In the 1849 white's directory (corrected from 1848 originally given) there is:
Brough Thomas, manufacturer of silver plated wares, 32, Sun street est.
No moulson

In 1855 Thomas Brough is at 28 northwood St

In 1855 and 1858

Moulson Thomas, german silver & silver plated ware manufacturer, 91 Hill street

1858
BroughThomas and George, mfrs of electroplated wares, 195, Warstone In
1862
BroughThomas and George, mfrs of electroplated wares,3½ Howard St
No moulson

1868 and 1873
Neither brough nor moulson mentioned

Thank you Mike, the Broughs are certainly mine & The Thomas Moulson in Hill street was the father of Henry Moulson...so armed with this useful info that you have given me I think I can now stop looking for a business connection...possibly Henry WORKED for the Broughs ! Thanks again for you help.

Margaret.

I was interested in your email as I am researching Broughs and descended from one "Thomas Brough" who was in business as "iron-plate workings", 15 Loveday Street, 18??. My Thomas married Angelina Fell.
Are we researching the same family?

Rachel

Hello there, sorry to jump on the band wagon but your information, Mike, regarding a 'White's Directory' did interest me. The occupations of my Coxes seem to alternate from silver plate ware, gilder master, electroplater and jeweller. I don't suppose if you know whether any Coxes appeared in this directory do you?

Thanks for any help
Ewan

Hello Rachel,
my Brough family was VERY large so who knows there may be a connection here....you didn't give a date for your Thomas & Angelina marriage ? And do you have parents names for Thomas ?

Regards,
Margaret.

Not all the directories I consulted were Whites, but I didn’t mention that. Also I have corrected the date of the first one consulted to 1849 (not 1848). I assume you are interested in Coxes in the silver/gold/jewellery trades. Otherwise there would be quite lot. I found the following for these years:
1849
Cox Francis, gold and silver refiner and assayer, 26, Great Hampton street
Cox John, electro plater and gilder; house,Short heath, Erdington
Cox Jno., jun., jeweller, 56½ Constitution hill

Cox Thomas, lapidary, and dlr. in all kinds of real stones, diamonds, etc, 74, Caroline street

Cox john, electroplater & gilder, 53 & 54 Ludgate hill
Cox, John, rnanufacturing jewellcr, 50 Howard st
Cox John jnr, manufacturing jeweller, 6 St. George's place, Gt. Hampton row

Thanks for that information, it was most refreshing to see the name Thomas Cox linked to the jewellery profession. I have been searching for the son of a Thomas Cox for many many years now without success, the only solid information I have (if there is such a thing) is on the son's marriage certificate where it states the father as Thomas Cox - jeweller.
I think I will start a new thread to ask for some more help now with this new information, as I don't want to clog up this thread. Thanks again.

Hi Margaret
I am a descendant of Henry Moulson and Mary Brough via Jane Moulson and Charlotte Keough. Not sure if you are interested in this line but I will be happy to provide what I have. I am stuck on the parents of Mary Brough - have you had any success identifying them?
Andy

Hello Andy,
I traced the Moulson/keough family as far as I could on all the censuses, but still have not found out the parentage of Mary Brough .... but my own Gtgrandparents were witnesses at the marriage of Mary & Henry...so there has to be a family connection somewhere...

Regards,
Margaret.
