Hi, ive joined ancestry.co.uk and signed up for a month, but i`m getting myself in a right kerfuffle!
i have HARRY BROOKES dob 1865, at TIPTON, later married to MARY dob c1870, TIPTON.
On the 1881 census it shows him as a stepson to WILLIAM WATKINS, as it looks like his mother remarried, and the whole family of eight emigrated to Yorkshire ,( census ed no.5 address 4 sheepskin rd.)
HARRYS dad, JOHN BROOKES, dob 1837 died aged 36 ( dudley 6c 26).
HARRYS mum ANN, dob 1839, at Wooten Wawen.
I could not find any birth match for JOHN, so i searched the 1861 census as a starting point. The only possible one (vessel 29 no.27), showed,
JOHN 24, JOSEPH23, parents WILLIAM and ELENOR.
For confirmation I looked at the 1851 census, again the only possibility was (vessel 1q no.134) ,which again showed,
WILLIAM, ELENOR, JOSEPH 13, ( ELENOR 15, EMMA 11,) but JOHN is reported as 4 yrs old!
There is nothing in the 1841 census to match, and i cant find a marriage between WILLIAM and ELENOR.
1871 census shows nothing for WILLIAM and ELENOR.(DEAD?)
1871 census shows a possible match for JOSEPH BROOKES
(VESSEL 6, NO.184 )
Could JOHNS age have been reported wrongly, or have I got myself in a terrible mess, I have been carefull not to try to MAKE people fit and have used only the strongest matches, but still looked at all the rest.
I have spent 11 hrs on this so far .:Aah:
To help me, I intend to purchase a certificate, but which one, or even two at a push, would be of most assistance?
A very frustrated Elaine.

Need the best Detecs on the Forum to sort that elaine, I can't even begin to read it at this time in the morning:)

After a good nights sleep, and a look at my post with fresh eyes, ive gone back to what i know for certain and sent for JOHNs death certificate and will take it from there. I think thats the most sensible solution instead of tying myself in knots.:)
