I attended the Orthopaedic Hospital on Broad Street in early 1970s for a knee problem. I was due to go into Northfield for an operation, but because I was in my teens and was told I had to wear a surgical boot afterwards, I cancelled it. I couldn't be seen walking around in an ugly surgical boot. As it turns out, it was lucky that I did as, after attending a different hospital many years later, I was told that if I had gone ahead with the operation I would have been partly disabled. What a lucky escape!
