Hello everyone,

I'm new here, and this is my very first post.

Is there anyone researching the Brittain family?

There appear to have been huge numbers of Brittain's (and various spellings of this surname) living around the Birmingham area, most likely all related somehow, but I'm not sure how yet.

These are some of the areas that I have found my Brittains in:  Birmingham, Leek Wootton. Meriden, Aston Juxta, Washwood, Ward End, Handsworth. I live in Australia so am unsure of the location of these places, though I have done a bit of research using old maps.

One of my Brittains married a Goodhall, so I'm looking for them too. Maybe the connection might ring a bell with someone.

I am searching for other families from the area but I've hit a bit of a dead end, so will post about them seperately.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Nab. Welcome to the forum. :)

Can you give christian names and also the dates in which you are interested. Then hopefully someone may be able to help.

Nab, when I lived in Tower Road ASTON I remember my Mom talking about a Mrs Brittain who lived in Tower Road as well. The time scale would be around 1947- 1962 as that is when I lived at 173.
I know this may not be much help but it may kick in with someone, hope so

I'm so sorry - I neglected to mention dates.

I'll start around 1856, with the marriage of William Brittain, brickmaker, (born Meriden) to Sarah Goodhall, born 1832. They married in the parish church Handsworth. It is their son (William) who I am related to. He emigrated to Australia in 1883 with two of his brothers (that I know of).

I but believe that HIS father, also confusingly called William, married Ann Clew in 1828.

Most of my Brittains seem to be labourers or brickmakers.

Hope that is clearer, and thank you for your replies, Di and Aston.

Hi there Nab.i'm sure you will get your answers here, keep posting and welcome O0

Thank you for the welcome Angie and Alf.

Thanks Chris, yes you are right - they are my Brittain family. - I have all the available census with my direct Brittains. At the moment I am waiting for the certificate of the marriage of William and Ann (aged 43 and 40 in the 1841 census above).

I think (hope) I will find that the parents of William are Thomas (chr 1779) and Mary?  - if my research is correct. It's all very exciting.

I'm actually quite curious about where they lived/were born/married. I have googled the places which appear on the census to try to get some idea. I'll mention a couple of places in case some of you locals may know what these places are like today, if they still exist that is:
Birmingham Road, Washwood Heath
Leek Wootton
Ward End
Parish Church, Handsworth
Meriden
Aston Juxta

Thanks to all. I'm sure I will enjoy my time here.

Welcome Nab and enjoy the site.

It is terrific fun and has great friendly people, as I'm sure you are finding out.

Good luck in your research :)

Hi Nab,

My hubby has Brittains in his family. His great grandmother was-:

Annie Brittain
1870-1897
Born 22/03/1870 in Walsall, Staffordshire. Married 1889 to Joseph Rodway. Died 24/04/1897 Birmingham
Daughter of John Brittain & Hannah Brittain nee Norton.

I'l let you know if I find a connection to your Brittains. Best wishes, Nell.

Hi Nell,

Nice to hear from you. Do you know if your hubby's Brittains included any Thomases, Williams or Georges?

I am not aware of any John's or Annie's in my tree in the timeframes you mention, but that doesn't mean that there weren't any. I've only been doing this family history research for a few months so am a novice with loads of blank spaces yet to fill.

Does your family have anything to do with bricks?

Do you know their religion?

Hi Nell,
Just had a quick look at your family in the 81 census - can't see an obvious connection there unfortunately.

just found interest in the brittains, william born about 1858 in ward end, moved to australia,he married mary jane nash in australia in 1885,they both moved to aus at the same time and live near to each other mary jane was sister to one of my ancestors, get in touch and maybe we can swap info.

Nab there was a Brittain family living in Church Lane in the fifties and my friend Denise Hodson is still in touch with Joyce. Denise is a member of the forum but I will e.mail her in case there is a connection with your Brittain's. Jean.
