British Subject Born Overseas

Nigelhls

knowlegable brummie
My Great Great Grandfather (born 1847), then resident of Wallsall, is listed in the 1871 census as having been born in France.
Can anyone tell me how to find out where in France he was born?

Thanks a lot
Nigel

Hi
Can you tell us his name as it may be possible to search Alien Arrivals between 1826 - 1869?

Hi, Suzanne
Thanks for the reply. The name is Thomas Henry Hulse, son of James Hulse (who died in Wallsall in 1849). However, would he be classified as an Alien if a british Subject?
Also, I made a mistake with the date of his birth: it was 1837 not 1847

Hi Nigel
Had a look but no joy I'm afraid. ( You are probably correct that he wouldn't be classed as an Alien - I didn't realise his parents were English? Also the incoming passenger lists don't start until 1878:(

Is Alfred Hulse his brother? I see he is on the 1851 with him. On the 1911 Alfred has Paris, France as his birthplace.

I think the first place to start is the British Embassy in Paris https://ukinfrance.fco.gov.uk/en/ Normally all British subjects born abroad must be registered by their parents, if they are British, with the British Consul or Embassy of their land of residence. Hope this helps, Graham.

Hi, Suzanne.
Alfred could well be his brother. In 1851, Thomas would have been 17 and Alfred 6.

Many, many thanks ; this really helps. I don't have the 1851 and the 1911 census form that I have, presumably the individual's one, is signed by Thomas and only lists himself, his wife Emma and daughter Emma. Looks as though I have another branch to follow!

Regards
Nigel
