Can anyone tell me what a 'Bran Carter' was ?.

1891 Census shows my Great GrandFather (William Rose - B 1875 -Balsall Heath) employed as a Bran Carter. I am entrigued !!

I looked up a few pages and all I could find was a CARTER was anyone who moved or delivered goods, this is in Victorian times:)

ie Wood Carter, Mineral Carter etc: My Grans 1st Husband was a Carter in Brum and he worked for T.S. Elements ?He drove a Horse & Cart
 
'Bran' My own logic would say 'A Bran Carter' is a carter of wheat
 
Bran is a fibre derived from grain. It would most probably have been carted in sacks as it is today, we have always fed our horses a feed of bran in winter.
 
Di that brought back memory's, when I was a lad I worked on Saturday's with a Delivery Roundsman (Use to call him a Baker) and we delivered from a Horse & Float a Two wheel van for Rowlands Bakery New John St Aston.

Ever Saturday they use to give the Horse's a treat of warm Bran in its feed, but only one day a week.:)
 
I could be wrong here....but I think that William is a Brass Caster.....his elder brother Owen is a Coffin Furniture Stamper.......
 
I have had a look and think that John is right. The brother's both may have worked in a coffin funiture manufacturer's which were brass. I notice in another post in 1901 he was working in a beadstead factory, which were also made of brass as well as other metals.
 
Bran Carter is what I would go for but if the chap heard wrong it could be what he thought he had said..........
 
Looking at the census image I would definately say "Brass Caster".

Graham.....I have seen what is written.....and I still think it say Brass Caster...his old brother is a coffin furniture stamper....brass handles etc....
 
Now I have seen it it shows the mistakes that can be made ...well done all
 
To Colin B - Thank you for taking the time post the attachment - now I'm going to be VERY cheeky and ask if you would post a copy/attachment of the entire entry for the Rose Family. I'm looking to confirm the address at the time of the census and who was there.

Hello again Colin

Can you help solve a mystery please.

You kindly gave me a host of information relating to my Great Grandad - William Rose (see post 16 dated 20th June).
From my 'amateur' diggings I believed Williams' father to be THEODORE ROSE (Born abt 1831).

I recently received a copy of the certificate for William Roses' marriage to Minnie Jones (m. 30.5.09 - All Saints Church Samll Heath) - on this certificate it states Williams Father as 'Benjamin' - yet I have Benjamin as his GrandFather (born abt1801) - I am perplexed and somewhat 'lost'. Could you / anyone help to point me in the right direction to confirming Father / GrandFather.

Hi Wendy, I have had exactly the same problem. I searched and searched for my gt grandfathers sisters marriage record. A kind lister found it for me but it stated the father's name was Thomas when I knew it to be John. I had this confirmed in a parish register a family bible and the IGI. Like you I knew her grandfather was Thomas, I decided to send for the certificate and sure enough it said father Thomas.......not John. I never found out Thomas's occupation but John was a Stockinger and this was the occupation given for Thomas on the wedding certificate. I have never managed to sort this one out and I don't think I ever will.

I sometimes ask when sending for a certificate for it only to be sent if the fathers name is **** so now I rethink this when sending for certificates.

Wendy,I have not had a lot of time to look ,but I have found a link suggesting Williams father would be Thomas Rose (1830) and his father Thomas Rose (1803).
There appears to be a large number of Rose around the Harborne area,and the names like Owen,Theodore,Hannah and Benjamin appear more than twice,so that would suggest there is a try up between them,I've not yet found the link.
I will pm you with what I've got later.
