I wonder if anybody could help - My husbands Great grand Parents were burried ib kings Norton, we have been in the cemetery in kings norton and asked on the forum for the cemetery to no avail,
their names were WILLIAM HODGETTS B1837/9 no date of death but he died before his wife who was Eliza Crisp b1742-1911
could anybody help please

Hi
The only death for a William Hodgetts in Kings Norton around his birth year that I can see is in 1914 aged 74 reference JFM 6c 68 but I see you say he died before his wife in 1911.

How can you be sure they were buried at Kings Norton? I ask because I have often found that people say things because they have been told, but what they have been told has frequently been an urban myth. Do you have them on any of the census returns?

There is a William Hodgetts who died in 1907. His age is given as 58, but families can often be wrong. My own 3 x gt grandmother was noted on her death certificate as being 75, when in fact she was 86. Do you have any information on him at all, so a picture can be built up - we can find his birth, and his marriage and then we might have something to go on. Also, you went to which cemetery? Your title is Brandwood End, but you say Kings Norton. I am presuming you mean Brandwood End.

thanks for the info, I have been doing some more research and in the 1911 census i have both William and his wife Eliza living at 3 Vale Cottages, Canale Side, Breedon Cross, now known as Lifford Lane.
when i said we looked in the cemetery in Kings Norton it was the one in the village itself
I have that Eliza died in 1911,

Ah, so you mean the churchyard and not a cemetery. I have not had time to look them up myself as yet, but unless William had a good deal of money, he may not have had a headstone. It was usual for the average person not to have one, as the cost was huge, even compared with today's prices. It would be the church records you would have to look up, and they will be in the library on microfiche. I know Lifford Lane, so I would suggest that Lodge Hill Cemetery is the place to look, I think that is probably the nearest. You would also be advised to look at the church records. If you are not in Birmingham, they would be available, except in school holidays, at your local LDS, for a small fee. I have a busy weekend with a church function, but if you leave this with me I will see what I can do, I might just be able to find them, or at least one of them, for you.

thank you very much for your time it would be appriecated, i live in the north of Scotland and only come to Birmingham for a few days in the October holidays

Well, as I only know Brandwood from Millpool Hill end, I could not judge and not had time to get out my map and look, as busy with preparations for a weekend function. Thanks for letting me know. I have put enquiries through, and we shall know within a few days, hopefully she will be in one or the other.

marhat, I visited BEC today to take some photos for another member so checked with the office, there's no Hodgetts burials listed between 1910-1915, sorry, they suggest possibly Lodge Hill.

Colin

Hi Colin

I sent off an email to Lodge Hill for Marhat yesterday, and also to Brandwood. Thanks for clarifying BEC though.

Eliza Hodgetts is not at Lodge Hill, they say. St Nicolas Church might be worth a try, but failing that, I don't have much idea, all the other cemeteries are so far away, she could be anywhere. I am having this problem with my own gt grandparents, hopefully one day I shall find them!

Reg,
If Steve has not already got the photos of the grave you requested, I visited the cemetery today and took the liberty to photograph the headstone of the grave, should you want copies, IM me your e-mail address, and I will forward them to you.
