hi
i am looking for info in regards to my gg grandfather
his name was john bowen born 1841 birmingham
he was a taylor by trade and he married mary ann brooks
the first time i have found him on a census is 1881 age 40
living in Blew Street 10 years later he was living in pope street
children
bertha
john
mary
elizabeth
joseph
harry
william
florence (my greatgrandmother)
i have not been able to find a marriage or birth for him
he died in 1909 and is buried in warstone lane

He was at 39 Pope Street in 1901. I'll add details in a while (there are a lot of entries!)

i notice the children were born in various places including ireland so the family moved around a lot!

there is a christening for john bowen b. 30 apr 1836 chr. 2 sep 1836 at st. martins with parents john and mary ann bowen living loveday st. bham millwright

also mary ann b. 14 oct 1834 chr. 30th nov 1834 parents john and mary ann living loveday st. millwright

and bertha b. 25th july 1842 chr. 31 aug 1842 parents john and mary ann living woodcock st. millwright

i wonder if these were johns parents as the name bertha is not too common and often names were passed down the family.

Hi Rich

John Bowen is listed as a tailor at 4 Blews st west in Kellys directory in 1880-1883. He is not listed in 1878 or 1884, though that does not necessarily mean that he wasn’t living there in those years. There is a John Bowen listed as a beer retailer (which could mean a pub or an off licence) at 238 Camden St in 1892-1896 . This is close to Pope st , as can be seen on the map (approx position of 238 in red), and it is tempting to think it might be the same John Bowen, as they are so close.
Blews st west, later named Rosebery St is off the map a bit further to the west up Camden st on the south side of the street.
If you look at any directories of this street, be warned that, for some reason, in many (all?) of them, the north side of the street is labelled south and south side labelled north.
In 1897 the John Bowen in Camden st has gone, but on ehas appeared as beer etailer at 20 Witton St. he is still there in 1899 , but gone by 1900, and not listed elsewhere.
Can’t seem to find the family on ancestry in 1891, so couldn’t check number of house in Pope st
A lot of this is speculation, but possibly worth considering

Here’s the 1911 entries that I found – all for 40 Pope Street (Ladywood, ecclesiastical parish St Paul’s). As expected, John Bowen is missing and Mary is a widow:
Mary Bowen, head 66 widow, Birmingham (married 47 years, 10 children born alive, 9 living, 1 dead)
Joseph Bowen, son, married, 30, 1, cyclke worker, Birmingham (arrow indicates married to Esther)
William Bowen, son, single, 28, b 1883, Polisher (cycles), Birmingham
Charlie Bowen, son, single, 25, Dipper (brass), Birmingham
Clara Lewis, daughter, 27, married (the following crossed out: 3 yrs married, 1 child born alive and 1 child living)
Esther Bowen daughter-in-law, 31, married 8 years, 2 children born alive and living
Jospeh Bowen, grandson, 7 born Birmingham
Henry Bowen, grandson, 11 born Birmingham
William Lewis, grandson, 1, born Birmingham

Incidentally, the "married 47 years" might help find a marriage. I would suggest going back 47 years from date of death initially - i.e. to 1861/2

Here’s the 1891 entries that I found – all for 238 Camden Street (All Saints, ecclesiastical parish All Saints):
Bowen, John, head, 49, 1842 Tailor, Bham
Bowen, Mary, wife, 47, 1844, , Bham
Bowen, Bertha, daughter, single, 26, 1865, Mansfield
Bowen, Mary A daughter, single, 20, 1871, Bangor
Bowen, Elizabeth, daughter, single, 17, 1874, Chainmaker, Handsworth
Bowen, Harry, son, married, 14, 1877, black ornaments, Bham
Bowen, Joseph, son, single,12, 1879, Bham
Bowen, William, son, 10, 1881, Bham
Bowen, Clara, daughter, 8, 1883, Bham
Bowen, Charles, son, 5, 1886, Bham
