Not sure this is correct thread does anyone recall a a blind match seller in Brum town centre always holding his stick out in front of him
unshaven sadly poorly dressed like a tramp.

I am hoping to get info for a relative.

One of her family was related to a blind match seller who was murdered in Birmingham, near New street, in late 40s early 50s, his surname may be Wood.

No because it was the 60s i recall seeing him
Mum used to say he was blinded in the war

Thread 'Birmingham in 1960s'

Hi All,
Does anybody remember the blind man selling matches in the 60's? He stood outside the post office by what is now W H Smiths, i can remember as a small boy pestering my dad for some money to buy some. He stood with a walking stick up in the air, andf he felt every coin that was given to him to check what its value was. I am going back to mid to late 1960's. Be nice if somebody else remembered him, he wasd quite a character to a small boy.

Thanks thats the one i used to meet my Mum at WH Smiths where she worked

I remember him. He would stand by one of the arcades holding his white stick up and boxes or books of matches between his fingers. He would invite you to just take a box and drop the money in a box below. Someone once told me that he knew the sound of the right amount of money dropped and would say so if not.
