Birmingham Training college - Bristol Road, Westbourne Road

Before 196o the college was only for women, and the course lasted for two years. However,in 1960 the intake also took men for the first time.
In 1962 which was the year when I started there the course was the first of the three year training the first time.Miss Rigg was a tyrant and even the men were in awe of her.She was a very tiny scots woman and wo betide anyone who digressed or displeased her.She ruled with a rod of iron and was very fixed in her attitude towards the students.
We often felt that it was like going back to school andwerenot treated as young adults.Nobody was allowed to wear jeans, the women had to always wear skirts, not trousers, and track suits were only for the sports students.
This was in the swinging 60's when the fashion for young people was growing.I remember a student "Sit Down" because the men objected to always having to wear a white shirt instead of the fashionable coloured ones!
Many of the students were called "mature Students" as they were older and quite often married with families. They were still obliged to abide by the rules set down by Miss Rigg.Often to their displeasure.
