A few interesting notes…
The Royal Warwickshire Regiment (then the 6th Regiment of Foot), saw service at battles like Alma, Inkerman, and Sevastopol.
The 11th Hussars, associated with the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, recruited from across the Midlands, including Birmingham.
The Crimean war gave rise to the Victoria Cross (introduced in 1856). Birmingham silversmiths helped produce some of the earliest medals.
The Birmingham Small Arms Trade (BSA) and dozens of smaller workshops in the Gun Quarter supplied muskets, rifles, and pistols to the British Army. Used in the Crimea and The Indian Mutiny. The controversy over the rifle’s greased cartridges (rumoured to contain cow and pig fat, offensive to Hindu and Muslim soldiers) was one of the sparks of the rebellion — so Birmingham-made weapons were directly entangled in the outbreak.
