Birmingham Newspapers 1939-1945

reading about incendiary bombs reminds me of dad telling me that he and his dad climbed the outside ladders of the factory opposite their house in villa st and knocked off the bombs that had landed on the roof...dad was evacuated but like so many came home after a couple of years thinking there would be no bombing...how wrong they were... dad lived in hunters vale off villa st and when a bomb hit not far away from dads house he said it shook the house..a couple of incendiary bombs landed on the wall of hockley brook which they pushed into the cut with long poles..how folk coped i will never know

Ash and Lacey

Can anyone tell me what Ash and Lacey used to do please? The name rings a bell, but that's all. Where were they situated in Birmingham? There is a suggestion of a link to the sweet shop in Hurst Street, but it's only a vague suggestion. Shortie

UNEXPLODED BOMB IN CITY…An unexploded bomb in a main street of Birmingham after Wednesday night's raid is shown (in circle) in the top picture. The two other photographs show R.A.F. men removing propeller blades of the bomber shot down at Smethwick, and the chassis of a wrecked motor-car that was blown into an A.F.S. water tank in Birmingham.

Hello. I have some Newspapers from January and February 1943 which I have found in my Grandfather's belongings. I am wondering where these could worthwhile if anyone has any ideas? It's full of news from the Front line and the war and war effort.

hi nicola i certainly would not throw them out...maybe you could think about donating them to somewhere like the back to backs museum in hurst st or even the black country museum...i have done that in the past as they rely on original things where possible
