Birmingham Lamp posts, ORIGINAL Colour please?

Gerry Cannell

master brummie
Hi everyone, a rather unusual request, and I do hope someone can assist me.
I have the original Nechells Gas Lamp number "3", I bought it from Kingsbury Yard in the late fifties.
I painted it red & white to match my then house, and when we moved, brought it with me.
I am now re-furbishing it, and wanted to paint it in the correct colour, which I understand was a kind of maroon and cream...
Any help would be great. I attach a picture of it in red & white.
Thanks,
Gerry

I recall the top being a beige cream colour
the bottom being a sort of maroon
the larger lamps painted council green
then later on biue

This may be of interest, but doesn't mention colour. I also remember the top part as "cream" but can't remember what the bottom half was.. This was in the 1960s/70s{?]

The 'Precinct' was a Group-B street light that was produced by Revo of Tipton exclusively for Birmingham City Council in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These large-canopied, 80-watt mercury lamped lanterns, were mounted on specially designed cast iron columns that wore the City Coat of Arm on their base doors. Made in their thousands, they could be found all over Birmingham during the 1960s, however, in the last couple of decades the vast majority have been replaced by more modern fittings, leaving just a few hundred intact examples in the City's suburbs by 2008. These might have been the replacements for the lamp mentioned in post no 1 ?

The Maroon is clearly shown under the flaking. Thanks. G.

Hi Guys, Thank you for all your replies and interest. I have just been going back to 2019, where I asked the same question, and for that I apologize. However, it has taken me all these years to actually arrange to have it professionally re-furbed. I am going with : Cream post and ladder holders and maroon bottom. The actual frame of the lantern, all edges are maroon. Unless someone can show me a colour picture which shows anything different. Thanks everyone. G
