Am trying to trace a 'big' old pub called The Birmingham Horse which was located in the by St. Martins church in the Bull Ring area of Birmingham. The Birmingham Horse was ran by Charles and Elizabeth Robbins round about 1871 but we can find no trace of such a pub. The name Birmingham Horse may not be entirely correct! Can anyone help with information please.

In the 1868 and 1872 directories there was a pub The Birmingham House , but at 243 Summer Row, in both years run by George Hook. This is notvery close to the bull ring. I can see nos similarly named pub listed by name in those two years.

Mike, in the 1871 census it shows them living at B'ham House or Horse, he is listed as a publican and the address is 186 Bromsgrove St. May help

Was just checking as you posted . In the 1871 census “The Birmingham horse “ is listed as 186 Bromsgrove St, which is listed in directories as William Nash Pavett, beer retailer in 1868 & Samuel Clark, beer retailer in 1872.
This is at one of the buildings marked in red, depending on whether the corner building is listed in Dean St or Bromsgrove St

The numbering seems to shift a little year by year. In 1876 it seems to be labelled no 187. I think there may have been some rebuilding between 1871 and the 1890 map. The beer retailer certainly seems tom have disappeared between 1884 and 1888.

1879 kelly's here is Dean St 185 Bromsgove St -----186 Bromsgrove St Shorthouse Miss Mary tripe dresser 187 Plowman Hy Charles beer retailer

There was a Birmingham Horse at 21 Moseley Street which was at the junction of Barford St. This pub was demolished in 1970 to make way for the new wholesale market. I suppose this couldn't have been the one you are looking for?

In the 1881 census , again it is listed as 187, but no name given. In the 1861 census 185-6 si a retail Brewers, with Enoch Hartidge in occupation, while in the 1851 census it was Thomas Griggs, retail brewer at 185-6. No pub name given in any of these.

An Unsual name The Birmingham Horse. Makes one wonder if it was named after the Horse Called: Birmingham
who won the St Leger in 1830. ridden by Patrick Connolly and trained by Flintoff. About 20 years ago I saw a huge painting on glass of this horse, It may have been at an auction or Antique dealers - it was the sort of thing that may have been at the back of a bar in an old Victorian pub.

Whilst trawling through Newspaper Archives (Birmingham Post), I have found numerous 'pubs' relating to my gt gt grandfather Abel Taylor and one of them being 'Horse' Bromsgrove Street. The article is dated August 1871. Any photos please?

The others are: 8/1873 Windsor Castle, Hockley Hill; 10/1873 and 12/1874 Ryland Arms Ryland Street; 9/1877 Australian Arms Sparkbrook and 5/1877 Grand Turk Ludgate Hill.
