Birmingham City Police 1839 - 1974

Welcome to the forum.

I was always proud of my Dad and In 1956 both of our fathers would have been outriders of the car carrying the Russian leaders Bulganin and Kuschov when they came to Birmingham, as a 14 year old I thought it was very exciting,

I remember the day the bikes first came out of Duke Street and the Birmingham Mail photographed them in Gosta Green, it was a really snowy day in February.
My Dad joined in 1947, worked in different areas of policing for 30 years then worked in Civilian roll as Vehicle controller at Park Lane, his name was Tom moore but known to everyone as 'Dad Moore'
He died in 1995 and his funeral was like a whos who of old coppers in attendance :)

Yes that's right - if you search google there is some film footage showing the police motorcyclists escorting Kruschov - I think I took this still clip from it. I have a few very good original photos of the motorcycle unit like the one above, which were taken by BSA presumably for promo material for the bikes, if you message me your email address I'll send you copies. Not at home for a while, I think I have another couple on my phone which might be of interest to you.

I recall a mate who worked as a Co-op milkman, he stepped down from the cart as the horse shied and twisted the turntable fracturing his femur,
Visiting him in the Accident hospital he pointed out a few cops who had damaged ankles and tibs & fibs caused by coming to grief on the motor scooters that had recently been adopted by the city police.
That would be early fifties I think

Yes that was my dad. He was at Thornhill Road from 1965 until 1981 when he retired. He then did 10 years with WMP Community Services. He passed on in January 2011. I still have his old night helmet from early 50s! I retired in 2005 after 33 years with Birmingham City Police and WMP.

Do you recall a PC C222 Don Woodhall and Ted Minchin from collators office Thornhill Road.
 
In the 1841 Census I believe my gt grandfather is listed as a member of the 5th Division of the Birmingham Police Force (Crooked Lane?) but when he got married in 1843 his occupation is listed as "Heavy Steel Toy Maker". ALthough it is entirely feasible the person I have found in the 1841 is not my grandfather but he is the only Henry Gould listed in the 1841 CEnsus in Birmingham whom was born in 1816.

Were the 5th Division of the Birmingham Police Force volunteers and he just happened to be on duty on the evening of the 1841 Census?

Does anyone have access to any records for the police force from about this time (1841)?

here is a photo of crooked lane showing the old lock ups which i would think is the building with the lamp outside..maybe the police force job did not suit him photo dated 1886 ...was he born in birmingham ? because on the 41 census its say not born in county

regarding police records you could contact the police museum in birmingham...its now at the old steelhouse lane police station..there is a death for a henry gould 1872 birmingham burial at witton

I was just revisiting this thread looking at the photos posted by dlewis (which he also sent to me by message) all having photos of my dad, he is the smallest one,lol.

It made me think of him when he was a beat bobby , they were often tasked with controlling traffic and they stood in the road wearing white gloves,
 
Hi all, do you remember a Malcolm Rose from Sparkhill? He showed me around when I joined in 70's. Anyone remember a traffic car accident on the Bristol Road in the 70's ? It was in 1977 in a brand new Ford that was on test, I think it was written off after hitting a lampost by railway bridge on Bristol Road not far from where the QE hospital is now.

Hi Jalex,
I remember Malcolm Rose. I started on the F around 1971. From what I recall he was a competent beat copper. I walked the beat with him a couple of times but I mainly did my training with another beat officer Gerry Kitson. I left the F division and Force in 1974 and emigrated to Canada.
