Hi Dave
Yes it was a very nice public house with a decent gather whom kept it clean in more ways than one
Hygiene, drugs, troublesom free , stood no nonesence my mates and myself used to play the darts there,
The only pub I never liked up there on dudley road was the duke of wellington ,if you recall it
It was only area yards from the BA, that's where there was always drunken fighting going on
The place was always dark and dinchie and the beer was rubbish, the next one is the wind mill
Another few yards facing the hospital fantastic pub I believe it still is according to my old friends
Whom go there even the younger generation they have a big room at the back with music and an old family
Relative as informed me and a lot of the old faithfuls from all those years ago are still coming and going there
I started going in there when beer was penny,s and Stan /Albert Kirby ran it they was a great bunch of people
It was always jammed packed in those days even then
The Lee Bridge Taveren was another fantastic pub just up the road on the corner of Heath Street
With the down stairs bar they played the bands and entertainment
The next one I mentionioned. Was where tom moved up to was the wheat sheaf on the corner
Of ickneild port road facing the old pawn shop by the zebra crossing
That one was trouble some very busy but always with fights most week ends
So they moved him up there to sort it out and he did , eventually retiring
A certain family whom I have known from Heath street Winson green there there parents
Bought and took over it and ran it ,I could tell you there family name but I cannot name them
For legal reasons done it no good because of the clienttal that was going in was of the wrong doings
It went back to the old day of fighting and family feuds of family's in and around Winson green
From time to time I do travel back to the green and see old faces but they are dwindling now
And the place as been left to go to rack and doings the council are neglecting areas
Like the green, Ladywood and surrounding areas
If you had seen or lived in the dudley road area or even in Winston green area way back in time
You would not believe your eyes to see the great deteriation of the area
Best wishes Astonian,,,,,,,,, Alan,,,,,
