Re: Fire at Birmingham Arms pub

Hi

Haven't been down that way for many years now, but when I worked in Western Road in the 60's and 70's
it was the pub we used for lunch. The gaffer there at the time was Tom Francis, and I've never tasted better
draught Guinness. They also served wonderful French sticks loaded with ham and cheese which I've never forgotten.

I probably put on a lot of my weight there!

Very sad sight.

Kind regards

Dave

Re: Fire at Birmingham Arms pub

I noticed last week how bad it was getting, was it totally destroyed?
rosie.

Re: Fire at Birmingham Arms pub

I went past yesterday and from Western Road the building looks the same. The windows upstairs aren't broken but the ground floor ones still have the same boards up.

Re: Fire at Birmingham Arms pub

Rosie
The last time I past there about 8 months ago those tyres was in the back yard and there was one hell of a lot
And my immediate thought was it only takes a butter or a squatter to come along and set a light
I was surprise no/one from the environment never clocked them long before the fire
If it had been out here in worc the culprits would have been date ted and prosecuted
I lived down the road from that pub it was one of my locals and believe I or should I say spent a fortune in there
And that as the days of ten am opening and staggered down the hill to get home
At that time they after was a little chap and well red
Acted and there was never arguing or fighting in there all the years he ran it he later moved up to the one on ickneild port rd
But sadly different years and different clientele may become one can jog my memory of the name of the pub
It was across from the bricklayers arms I knew the family whom took over him years later Alan,,,,astonian,,,,

Thanks for the update Terry. That doesn't look too good at all. I've merged both your threads about the pub as it makes sense to have them both together. Hope that's ok. Viv.

Hi terry and viv
Many thanks to you both for putting up on screen and information to us all on the forum
I am totally shocked to see what as happen end here
I spent a fortune in that pub and thousands of hours in years gone bye my mates and myself it was our regular
Haunts playing darts and staggered out many times after hours
I recall the one gather he was a little fella well strict and ran the pub great and stood no messing
I cannot think of his name at the moment but I can see him vizualy in my mind
They took him out of it and transfered him to sort out the busy but problem pub called the wheat sheaf
Afew more pubs up the road it was on the corner of ickneild port road and dudley road afew yards from the
Old police station at summer field road
What a said ending to a great old pub with history
I am wondering whether our dear friend mossy as picked up this news today down at Weston
As my friend mossy worked at the factory Barker and Allen for years and always in there with another old friend
Of mine as mossy and my friend whom as passed away many years now they was like blood brothers mossy and midnight
Whom real name was Micky, mossy will know him
I hope there was no/one injured when I passed there about 18 months ago it still looked solid building and in good shape
What caused it ,I would like to know whom was the contractors for the job,
Many thanks again guys best wishes Alan,, Astonian,,,,,,

Hi Alan

I used to have a lunchtime drink in there in the late sixties, - the best draught Guinness I ever tasted.

I seem to remember that the gaffer then was Thomas Joseph Francis.

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Dave
Yes it was a very nice public house with a decent gather whom kept it clean in more ways than one
Hygiene, drugs, troublesom free , stood no nonesence my mates and myself used to play the darts there,
The only pub I never liked up there on dudley road was the duke of wellington ,if you recall it
It was only area yards from the BA, that's where there was always drunken fighting going on
The place was always dark and dinchie and the beer was rubbish, the next one is the wind mill
Another few yards facing the hospital fantastic pub I believe it still is according to my old friends
Whom go there even the younger generation they have a big room at the back with music and an old family
Relative as informed me and a lot of the old faithfuls from all those years ago are still coming and going there
I started going in there when beer was penny,s and Stan /Albert Kirby ran it they was a great bunch of people
It was always jammed packed in those days even then
The Lee Bridge Taveren was another fantastic pub just up the road on the corner of Heath Street
With the down stairs bar they played the bands and entertainment
The next one I mentionioned. Was where tom moved up to was the wheat sheaf on the corner
Of ickneild port road facing the old pawn shop by the zebra crossing
That one was trouble some very busy but always with fights most week ends
So they moved him up there to sort it out and he did , eventually retiring
A certain family whom I have known from Heath street Winson green there there parents
Bought and took over it and ran it ,I could tell you there family name but I cannot name them
For legal reasons done it no good because of the clienttal that was going in was of the wrong doings
It went back to the old day of fighting and family feuds of family's in and around Winson green
From time to time I do travel back to the green and see old faces but they are dwindling now
And the place as been left to go to rack and doings the council are neglecting areas
Like the green, Ladywood and surrounding areas
If you had seen or lived in the dudley road area or even in Winston green area way back in time
You would not believe your eyes to see the great deteriation of the area
Best wishes Astonian,,,,,,,,, Alan,,,,,

taken today....the pub is just a pile of rubble now but i did manage to come away with a very old brick...of course i would much rather have the pub still standing and up and running..

Hi lyn, I just pressed the "like" button, but just to clarify it wasn't because the pub is now rubble but that I thought it was funny you managed to get a souvenir!!
rosie.

Sorry to hear about the BA.Used to use this pub on Friday lunchtimes with a few mates from Barker and Allen.Even when working nights Charlie on security would ring the maintenance lads around midnight and order drinks from there to consume at the main gate office. If I remember correctly B and A employees were given a warning that if any more foreign coins were found in the Arms' fag machines we were all barred.
I'm convinced that one morning,6am,after finishing nights, that a regular from the above pub nicked my old Ford Anglia off B and A's car park and left it dumped by Winson Green nick, for me to collect two weeks later.
Am I right in thinking they are starting to demolish Barker and Allen?

hi dave not sure where barker and allens are but i looks like some demo is going on close to the pub

lyn

Hi Lyn,Barker and Allen is situated in Heath st. south just up from the BA.In actual fact their was two houses sandwiched between the pub and the main gate but I think they were demolished some time ago.
The signage may be EIP metals.

Hi Lynn Barker and Allen factory was the original factory which ran up the side of the side exits of the pub
In that side street which had two big gates you would have had to walk through if you worked there
The original plaque was always on the front of the factory building on the dudley road side frontage they never removed it
Fomway back in the sixtys it was taken over by delta whom was also in Arglie Street nechells that there was the
Sister company I was a department manager in the electro plating department
Our dear old friend Mossy used to work there at the time of barker and Allen and when it changed to Delta metals
Best wishes Balkan,, Astonian,'

I read in an earlier post that someone had mentioned that the BA was full of tyres. This is also mentioned that B and A was used as a tyre dump.
Pictures of B and A can be found on a site called derelict places under EIP metals.
