This is a drawing of the construction of the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. The great canopy of steel and glass were supplied by Birmingham companies. The steel from Fox Henderson & Co and the glass from Chance Glass of Smethwick. The building was based on Joseph Paxton's gigantic conservatory at Chatsworth. The trusses for the central aisle were raised with the help of huge cart horses in January 1851.
