Bilston Central Station

Mark Tooze

master brummie
Here are some photos of Bilston Central station, taken in the early-mid 1980's. This station was on the Snow Hill - Wolverhampton Low Level GWR line, and closed to passenger traffic in 1972. The line still had limited good traffic at the time the photos were taken, and is now part of the Midland Metro line.

The station buildings were removed many years earlier, so the platforms are empty:-

These are certainly of use to show the final years. The station buildings for Bilston Central were of similar design to Handsworth, West Bromwich and Wednesbury.

The scrapyard was a long lasting feature after the passenger services were removed finally in 1972 and the track taken up from Handsworth to Snow Hill. Freight remained in place from Wednesbury through to Bilston and the freight depot at Monmore Green, but declined after the closure of the Patent Shaft Steelworks.
