As you can see on the picture, most of the houses had a driveway leading up to the garage as well as the garden.
Luckily not all of thehouses ended up with just a drive and no garden.
 
Sign of the times that the (1930s/40s ?) archtects/builders incorporated a garage and driveway into the design of the house. An expectation that more families would be driving cars. Imagine suggesting to them that, in the future, families could be 2-car/3-car plus families.

I think the design of the garages around the time was of smaller dimensions (than those needed today) as cars were smaller.
