Hi,
Wouls someone be kind enough to have a look for Mrs Bessie Cotton last known address running a hardware store in Green Lane Small Heath Birmingham in 1940.
If anyone can tell me from what year they started to run this shop in Brum from I would be gratefull, Bessie Phillips and her husband Myer Cotton married in Brum in 1919.
They could have been in Brum as late as the 1960s but were in London by 1965 because Myer was buried there, I would appreciate any help on this family.
Many Thanks
Ian

Myer and Bessie Cotton are at 510 Green Lane from 1920 to 1939 in the electoral rolls, Charles and Gertrude Ashley are there from 1945 so they had gone by then.

Thankyou very much Lloyd, perhaps thats when they left for London.
I wonder if its possible to get a photo of the store?

Was there anyone else of voting age living at 510 Green Lane lloyd, I havent found out for sure yet if they had children.

Not in 1939 - if they married in 1919 the earliest any child could vote would be 1940/1.

There is this possibility though:
Maurice E B Cotton, birth reg 2nd quarter 1929 Birmingham North vol 6d page 804. Mother's maiden name Phillips.

Kellys shows 510 green lane as Mrs Bessie Cotton , hardware dealer back to 1932, but in 1921 it is B.Cotton, jeweller . In 1915 it was Mrs Sarah Record, laundry . Charles Ashley, boot dealer was there by 1943.

Thankyou Mike and Lloyd for all your help.
Lloyd is it possible for you to do a Electoral register search for Maurice Cotton?
I had come across his name before but had nothing to link him to Bessie.

Maurice EB Cotton married Vivienne M Bullivant 1st quarter 1953 Birmingham vol 9c page 644

There is a Maurice Cotton at 64 Nailstone Crescent, Hall Green in 1955 electoral roll but there is an Ellen E Cotton with him, not Vivienne.

Vivienne Mary Cotton (born 1930) death reg. May 2005 Birmingham.
Ellen Elizabeth Cotton (born 1906) death reg. 1973 Birmingham 9c 1459
Several Maurice Cotton deaths, but I can't tie any of them in conclusively.

Maurice EB Cotton and Vivienne M Bullivant may have had these children:

Gillian A Cotton, b. reg. 2nd quarter 1957 Solihull 9c 1600
Karen M Cotton b. reg. 4th quarter 1962 Solihull 9c 1795

mother's maiden name for both Bullivant.

Thanks for the help again Lloyd I knew about his marriage to Vivienne and possible children but unless I got some other information to link them to Bessie or contacted a relly of Maurice I couldnt prove it.
I managed to track down his daughter Gillian,it turns out Maurices father was Edwin Cotton not Myer so thats that I dont think Bessie had any children.

I wonder if they moved out of Birmingham during the war, and went to London later?
Does anyone know if this area of Green Lane was bombed??

Otherwise, I'd start searching them out in London, working backwards from Myer's death in 1965
Myer Cotton's death reg. 2nd quarter 1965 Poplar vol 5d page 486

I think they must have gone to London either during the war or just after,it would seem strange to go to london though because of the shop being bombed because London would have been the same or worse.
Bessie died in 1979 in the Stepney district of London but yes you are right i need to be able to check directories for London to see where they lived and what they were up to.
If I have added the link below correctly it is from the London Gazette would you be kind enough to have a look and tell me what it means, is it Stating when a reading of Bessies will will take place?

It gives her date of death (24 Feb 1979) and her last address (35 Arnold Rd, Bow, London E3), her condition (widow), and the solicitor dealing with the estate. The will (if any) has already been read, this statutory notice is to give anyone with any claim (unpaid bills, etc, or contesting of any will) to get in touch with the named solicitor before the estate is finally settled and benefits (if any) paid out.
