Thank you so much for the pictures, what memories. If I am not mistaken the small shop in the picture is Nellie Riley's shop, but I have to say it was a shock to see the pictures of Berner's street because your memories as little girl are so different to when your are a middle aged woman. In the third picture is that the outdoor, if it is we lived a little down the road from there. Gloria Yates lived next door to the outdoor, would you remember her. Burbury Street Park was always so well maintained when I was a child with plenty of shrubs and trees. The Park Keeper always on hand to make sure there was no trouble and you would go to him if you had hurt yourself. I remember the big open Shed near the toilets that we would run to if it was thunder and lightening. The spider web rounabout that I chipped my tooth on when my friends were whizzing it around whilst I was doing my balancing act. I could prattle on all day. Thanks so much for the memories, keep in touch regards
Sherrill

Mabz, no the name doesn't ring a bell. What number did Julie live at I lived at 2/72 Berners street. Family names I remember are the Yates, Glynn, Sugar, Facey, Bailey, Forester, Colier, Pearman, Lancaster and little old Nellie Riley who owned one of the little shops. Is the Pub the Duke I think it was called at the bottom corner of Berners St near Lucas's still there. Regards
Sherrill

hi sherrill..im afraid the duke of cambridge is no longer there or the lord byron that was just accross from it...

Hi Baron,

Been there, done that. Bet at sometime you also expended blood , sweat and tears, as I did, making a knife switch. I was at Witton in #2 Drawing Office at the time ..... Ah Memories.

Cheers,

DaveG

Hi DaveG, What year were you at aston tech elec lab? I was in EDO in my first year at GEC. Alway parked my motor scooter out side & in those day never had any thoughts of it being stolen or smashed up for fun,O HAPPY DAYS.
Its great to hear from someone who had to suffer the slings & arrows of days spent in the Lab.
THE BARON

Hi Baron,

Joined GEC Aug 1956 as an apprentice draughtsman. Would have been at Berners St whilst doing City and Guilds in 1956/7. EDO sounds familiar. I ended up in PCD after a 7 year apprenticeship which included time at Gosta Creen and Castle Bromwich Hall. Emigrated to Canada in Jan 1965.

Hi Dave, i have sent you a PM, looks like you & I were at Bermers st at around the same time?
Have you looked at the GEC THRED?
Keith

Does anyone remember the 'rag and bone' shop opposite Burbury Park where you could take your old clothes and socks, get them weighed and receive money in exchange? It was the way we as kids could raise money so we could go to the pictures. My mother would have to keep a wary eye on me and my bothers and inspect everything we were taking down there since our main objective was to get money and not what we were going to wear the next day. Best prices were for wool items and, in order to maximise profits, we would always roll non-woolen items inside old woolen socks. But the woman attendent at the place had an evil eye and always sorted out the hidden non-woolens. ...... Ah such sweet memories!

Dave do you remember this guy (G.Goldingay)he and I were both at Berners St ,doing City & Guilds around the same time as you, If you were inPCD you would have known TOM DILLWORTH <KEITH RICHARDSON< MR MERRY (the one armed fantastic golfer)?

hi lynn
great picture good memories of the streetand did nt the flights family of generations do well for them selves
which was started by the grand father and knowing that the great grand father was a rag and and bone man whom
set up a little garage on the victoria rd all those years ago by bying an old shara bang and organised day trips which went from strenth top strengh
and his garage repairs made him rich and his sons and his grand sons and mde the family internatiomaly world wide famous
so thats a story of rags to riches and they made and put birmingham on the map of the travel world
have a nice day every body and keep warm and be careful whilst walking out dont be like me falling flat on your back like me yesterday
luckily we still have good folks in the world today whom do care for people best wioshes astonion

good morning alan...oh dear i do hope you didnt hurst yourself yesterday..you realy must be careful...ive nearly come a right pearler a couple of times...i know berners st holds special memories for you..that and the union pub and yes its great to hear the story of how flights coaches made good...

you have a good day and take care if you are going out...

Sad to read the Union closed. Memory recalls: sitting on the steps with crisps and pop - being clocked by regular having a drink outside of me right behind, as very close, no 8 bus whilst on bike (perfectly safe) - a bit older drinks of the intoxicating kind outside - older still inside dominoes and fishing club - oh well time marches on.

Can you clarify if the picture of shop from Carl’s book is if walking from Wilton Street towards Burbury St then it was on the corner before Lozells Junior school?
