Beresford’s

Hayleybez

Brummie babby
Hello all,

I hope you’re all well.

I wondered if anyone had any information about people in the Beresford family, namely George, Bertha Anne or Henry Charles who lived in Sutton Coldfield / Solihull around the 1930’s.

I am trying to track down where they were buried but I have found absolutely no information after spending a fortune trying to find them.

George Ernest Sidney Beresford. Born 1907, died 1934

Bertha Ann Beresford. Born 1874, died 1937

Henry Charles Beresford. Born 1874, died 1930

Also, does anyone have any information about an Oak Tree Cottage, Clarence Road, Four Oaks around 1931?

I would very much appreciate any information.

Many thanks,
Hayley

I assume you must have tried all the local cemeteries - Robin Hood, Sutton Coldfield. Is there any reason that they may not have been buried/cremated locally? I note Henry was born in Norfolk.

There's a mention of Henry in a couple of Staffordshire newspapers (Jan 1926) concerning an arrest of man named Green.

And a possible mention for Bertha in May 1917 for harbouring a deserter.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried a lot of the local cemeteries. The only one I haven’t tried is Robin Hood. They would have been buried locally, I know they all died around Sutton Coldfield. They moved here from Holt in Norfolk when Henry’s business had to close down. Can I ask where you found the information about Henry and Bertha in the newspapers? That would be fascinating to read. Many thanks.

There is a book of remembrance for Robin Hood, though I'm not sure it contains all burials/cremations. And the search feature seems a little awkward, I'm not sure if there's a better way to search...

The newspaper articles are on findmypast (subscription required) and they may be on other genealogy sites also.

Also I see that Henry's and Bertha's youngest son (Leslie) appears to be listed at 9 Clarence Road on 1939 register.

From Google maps number 9 is in a terrace of four houses and these appear to predate most of the other houses on Clarence Road, it is on the 1903 map. I wonder if this house was known as Oak Tree Cottage or the terrace as Oak Tree Cottages.

Though there appears to be a plaque that now names them Willow Lane Cottages.

Robin Hood Book has to be searched by death date - but I think it only contains the names of people whose relatives have paid for an entry. If you need to contact Robin Hood I suggest you email as the main office (just inside the gates) is permanently closed. I checked for someone on another thread earlier this week.

I have contacted Robin Hood but they have told me I would have to pay £31 for each person to be searched and it’s non refundable if they aren’t buried there.

I have looked on Birmingham burials website and they aren’t listed anywhere on there. All I know is George’s wife Elizabeth is buried in Wednesbury. I have no idea about the rest of the family, I just can’t find them anywhere. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places. I’ve tried Birmingham burials, find a grave, deceased online and contacted Birmingham council. I’ve also tried Warwickshire council who have no record of their burials. I know they weren’t taken back to Norfolk because the whole family moved here, there was nobody left in Norfolk. Thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate it.

Meant to ask earlier - were they Catholic? That would open up another place. Or have you tried local churches?
Also Perry Barr is not on the Birmingham site as it is run by a firm not the council. If you have a date rather than just a year then we could look at Robin Hood book.

I believe they were CofE. We are Catholic but I believe that came from my Nans side rather than my Grandads. I have tried a couple of the churches nearby to where they lived but no luck. I have their death certificates so the dates and places they died are:

George - 21st April 1934 - 37 Blackberry Lane, Sutton Coldfield

Bertha - 12th July 1937 - 1 Lode Lane

Henry (Harry) - 28th October 1930 - Stratford Road Shirley, Solihull

Have you tried St James in Shirley? Henry has the earliest date and it could have been a family grave. The parish records are at Warwick but I am not sure what records are at the church.

1 Lode Lane was the address of Solihull Hospital (as it became - started out as a workhouse).
