I am trying to locate the birth of my GGG Grandfather, Joseph Bentley. According to census 1841 - 1871 he was born c1808 Yardley and lived there during 41 and 51 census but at Bordesley/Aston during 61 and 71 census. He was a bootmaker. His wife was Mary Ann Smith born c1813 Heanor Derbyshire. I don't know how to track down his birth record or those of his siblings, plus marriage of his parents (names unknown). I live in Australia so cannot possibly visit any archives centres to view records. Can someone give me a suggestion?
Thanks!!

Hi Sandra

barrie has give you the link to the site i would also recommend, you will have to register, it is free, once done you can search the

International Genealogical Index

This is listed on the left hand side of the search page, i have just had a quick look and found 16 Joseph Bentley's but i am not sure which parish he would have been in.

As you live in Oz, heres a link to some old and not so old photo's of Yardley --

Joseph Bentley

Hi guys,
Thank you both for your replies. I had already searched on the Family Search website but can't seem to find any Joseph's that would be the correct age in the right area. They are all considerably older or younger. I haven't yet looked at the photo's but I'm sure they'll be great. I've got into the bad habit of buying old postcards etc on ebay if the town has a family connection. It's starting to cost a bit..... If you can think of anything else, I'd love to hear from you.
Regards,
Sandra

Joseph Bentley

Hi again,
I've had another look at the LDS site as I remembered seeing that a Matilda Bentley was a witness at the marriage of Joseph to Mary Ann Smith in 1836. For the moment I am assuming that Matilda was a sister. I eventually found her marriage in 1837 at the same location to Richard Morvan who also witnessed the marriage of Joseph and Mary Ann. The IGI certainly shows a Matilda of very similar age and quite a few siblings all with the same parents - George and Amelia but I still haven't found Joseph. Any ideas???
