This must have originally been built as the Bournbrook Hotel judging by the Holt’s Brewery ghost sign across the front of the pub. Surprised to see such a large pub still standing and still operating as such. Viv.

A good aeriel view looking along Dawlish Road in the 1960s. The plaque on the wall on the houses to the left reads "Kerby's Pool Villas, 1888" Who was Kerby ?

worked here when it was called the Bournbrook, wondered if anyone had photos of the inside when there was a bistro inside to the left

It was still the Brournbrook Hotel in the 1960s & 70s, before the disease of name-changing infected pubs
I have to admit I was the designer who with a contractor, converted the Bournbrook to the Old Varsity Tavern, back in the '80's, good times, sadly I didn't own it or I would be living it up on the French Riviera now.

A token for Kerby's Pools mentioned in earlier posts. The sale details quote Bournbrook Grounds, Selly Oak.as per Janice's map above.

The Bell and Malt Shovel Inn existed from at least 1808. Reference to the Inn over time changed from its full title to simply the Malt Shovel Inn. In 1877 it's name was changed to the Bournbrook Hotel.

In the 1830s, James Kerby owned land that included the Inn and it was developed into a pleasure garden with three pools offering boating and fishing. Hence the name Kerby's (Kirbys) Pools. That, along with Kerbys Tea and Pleasure Gardens, became popular entertainment venues. The Inn was extended and partially rebuilt in 1877, and was renamed the Bournbrook Hotel

Yes, changed yet again, in more recent times. Started as the Bell and Malt Shovel, then the Malt Shovel, then the Bournbrook Hotel, then the Old Varsity Tavern and then the Goose at the OVT (Old Varsity Tavern)
