Bbc Turn Back The Time Programme

I've just watched the programme on iplayer - really enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing your neice next week John. These forums seem like one big family - I belong to countryside forum, and one of the members provided the pig for the programme and another member drove it down to Shepton Mallet!

I disagreed with one comment made during the programme, that people don't use ironmongers any more. Next door to our shop is a WONDERFUL ironmongers. They've been there well over a century and it's still run by the same family and it's very well used. It probably helps that the nearest B&Q is 30 miles away, but they sell things not available in DIY superstores. In the last 6 months I've bought: a block of beeswax, a fireguard, some gold cupcake cases and cake decorations, some galvanised hinges for my shed (didn't know what I was on about in B&Q!), and umpteen other bits and peices - they've not let me down yet.

We hear holidaymakers' comments as they go past, many saying that it's 'the best shop ever'! or carrying their purchases and muttering 'four candles'.

This picture reminds me of a grocery store my aunty used to take me to, in Alum Rock, at the bottom of Havelock rd opposite Ted Haynes, I think it was 'Masons' It felt really posh to me, but, I was only small, so it probably wasn't this grand.
This is picture of an upper class confectioners from a book I bought to find out more about the bakery buisness. The book is dated 1906. I thought it was a lovely picture.:)

Tonight BBC 1 AT 9 PM my niece Gill is in the next two episodes.

Really enjoyed tonights programme. John, your niece is very talented - the corset she changed for 'her customer' was lovely and very in fashion at the moment!

I thought the sight of the men leaving the town to go to war was a very poignant reminder to wear a poppy with pride.

I feel very sorry for the bakers - they do seem to be having a difficult time with the ingredients and the ovens.

Looking forward to the thirties next week. :)

Thank you, yes she is, you should go to her website and look at the corsets and wedding dresses she makes, just google gilly woo they are brilliant.

I agree Polly. John's niece seems just the sort of shopkeeper/ business women that is needed today to combat the dreary sameness of todays chains. Mind you, there's no way i'd wear a corsett, so i don't think i'd be a customer!!

Thoroughly enjoyed last night's episode, and may I add to the admiration of your niece Gill, John, she certainly knows her stuff.

I have just watched last weeks 1930's episode. I really enjoyed it. The bathing costumes were funny lol Isn't it great the youngsters appearing on the programme don't mind dressing in the clothes even in public.
Yet again the bakers seem to be having the hardest time - the bakers wife missed out on the day trip as she had to stay behind and make cakes - I hope they get an easier time soon. Also Gill, the dressmaker missed the trip as she had to stay behind to make dresses that had been ordered - one was shown at the end of the programme - it was lovely.

I wonder what has happened to the shops they filmed this series in - does anyone know? It would be interesting to know if the programme did revive the high street there.

Polly :)

Don't forget tonights episode.
Here's an update on Gill, she has been invited to switch on the Christmas lights in Shepton Mallet, and also has opened her first retail outlet there.
She is doing a program with the Queens hairdresser soon, will keep you posted.
Here are two of her latest creations.

John, that is great news - a new retail outlet and another programme!
What a lovely little video clip, you must be very proud.
Polly :)

Fantastic when proper talent is rewarded. The dresses are amazing such beautiful colours great for Christmas. Can't wait for tonights episode....well done Gill.

Well, tonights episode over, Gill was supposed to go and be a land girl, and ended up chasing a piglet, but the BBC in their infinate wisdom decided to cut the scene for some reason, time I suppose.

The programme was still good John I can't believe what Gill did with that coat........lovely!

I am sure you will enjoy it Polly I won't give any more away. I love the way it seems to have bought the place to life!

I would really love to know if the programme made any real difference to how the locals felt about the High Street after the cameras had stopped filming.

I think it is an excellent series - it makes a change from the usual stuff on TV. I am sure there is an increased interest in social history since researching family trees became popular. Each week I have watched it and thought of my family members that would have been alive at that time.

Wendy, I thought of you as I seem to remember that one of your relatives was a confectioner or baker.

Polly :)
