Right here goes - this is pure conjecture but seems to fit the facts:
Keith you said Charles seemed to puit different names for his Father - was one of them Henry or Harry? If so then it adds to the evidence.
Time line as I see it
1892 Henry Dunhill marries Gertrude Baldwin reg West Bromwich (which at the time includes Handsworth and Perry Barr)
1893 son Edgar born* mmn Baldwin
1896 son Robert born* mmn Baldwin
1898 daughter Gertrude born* mmn Baldwin
All above reg in west Bromwich
1900 Harry and Gertrude in court on child neglect. Notice the address is Perry Barr. Dated February 1900
(I am not sure where Edgar was at this stage)
1900 son of Gertrude Charles William born birth reg as Bayley - reg with mmn Baldwin
1906 daughter Emily born* mmn Baldwin
1909 daughter Bertha born* and dies mmn Baldwin
1911 son Harry born
1913 son Harry dies
All these reg in Birmingham
On Charles army form he gives address as court 25, house 8 Cheapside
On 1920 eroll Henry and Gertrude are listed at that address Still there on 1921 census with daughter Emily
Erolls show them at that address until at least 1935
1911 census Herny and Gertrude with children Gertrude, William, John (no idea who he is at the moment) and Emily are at 67 Meridan Street
William is down as born 1900 – so I suspect this is actually Charles William but listed here as Dunhill.
1921 census Henry and Gertrude with Emily are at Cheapside.
That is as far as I have got. I can't find them on 1901 census. Need to find where Edgar was and who John was.
Suspect the move from Perry Barr to Birmingham coincided with the appearance in court. Think they concealed Charles birth by using a false name to prevent him being taken into care.
I have baptism and birth reg for all the children marked with *
Too much of a coincidence that Charles gives that address, Gertrude is named as his mother and Gertrude lives at that address.
What do you think? Have I loost the plot or is there an element of truth in my thinking
