Battle of the Somme

Very interesting site postie.
We visited the Somme a few years ago, such a peaceful place now, hard to imagine the horrors of war.

I stood in front of the Thiepval memorial and saw the names of 75,000 men(boys)whose bodies were never found and realised that these were only a fraction of the dead.

The Somme is a very sobering place to visit, rows upon rows of white gravestones in immaculately tended cemeteries. The ages on the stones are heartbreaking mostly 18 years of age.Children who volunteered or were sent to their death.

only just found out today, that my granddad, Martin Brislin, was in it...from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment no. 201477
the only grandparent I ever saw (when I was about 2 or 3 in about '61 or '62). He ended his days in Highcroft mental hospital because of a breakdown after shell-shock and being gassed (trench foot too). :'(

watching the programme about it on Channel 4, right now.
I have been very affected by this since finding out, only a couple of weeks ago, that my granddad was in it...
I'm not really sure why, even though it is very important for each one of us.

Thanks to Terry Carter on B'ham Pals forum, found out that my g/dad was in the 1st or 2nd of the 5th regiment of the Royal Warwicks. Mom confirmed today that he was based at Thorp St. which confirms that.

Mazbeth glad you got what you was looking for,all the info is here on this site and Terry is only glad to help out, as the Warwicks is his passion. If anyone else is stuck we can point you in the right direction

thanks Cromwell, I do appreciate it.
Just been trying to get my 16 year old son to watch the programme.
He's a really great lad with a loving heart, but it seems so far away from them at that age, I think (as it would have done me then, at that age)...
he looked teary-eyed, but I think has carried on with his computer game :(
I guess my mom will be watching it...it's for her I feel it the most, as she is a wonderful mom and misses her dad. :(
