Fantastic pictures there Pedrocut! If I remember right (and I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong!) - The New Church was not built on the site of the old church. The old Church was by the Library, at the junction of Field Lane and Genners Lane. The graveyard is still there, hidden behind a tall hedge. When the "New" centre for Bartley Green with its "Shopping Centre" was built about a half mile away, the new church was built there.St Michael's parish church, Bartley Green, Birmingham creator: Lewis Lloyd. 1933.

The old Church was demolished in 1968, it had been unused for some years and was "derelict". The New Church was opened in 1966.I certainly don't remember a church at the junction of Field Lane and Genners Lane in the 1970s.
Thanks for those pictures of the Library, Pedrocut. I spent many a happy hour in there in the 1969/70 going through their collection of Eagle Comic annuals. It was reading the "Eagle Book of Aircraft" there as an 11 year old that set me on course for joining the RAF later. Happy days! It had changed a lot since 1913! Glad to see the Library is still operating today.Reading Room in Bartley Green Library near Birmingham creator: Lewis Lloyd. 1913.

[Remember using Erdington Library and you would see the same old chaps having a warm in the winter, studying form and waiting for the bookies to open]

Hi Peter - was it perhaps next to the Bartley Green football club building? - I seem to remember notices in front of it announcing Sunday School in the late 1960s - early 1970s. - The burnt-out shell of the building still stands beside the Football club building.- As seen in this Google Street view link below . - If you click on "See other dates" you can see other pictures of the building going back to 2009 when it was still substantially intect - although obviously disused...Was there an old chapel in a shed-like building on Jiggins Lane? It was between Modbury Avenue and the Cock Inn. I'm pretty sure that it was linked to the old church of St Michael's. I remember going to Sunday school there in the mid 1950's.

Thanks Dinger- That's exactly how I remembered it. I'm amazed that it has lasted so long!! We lived in the newly built council houses in Bickington Road, so it was only a short walk to the "annexe".Hi Peter - was it perhaps next to the Bartley Green football club building? - I seem to remember notices in front of it announcing Sunday School in the late 1960s - early 1970s. - The burnt-out shell of the building still stands beside the Football club building.- As seen in this Google Street view link below . - If you click on "See other dates" you can see other pictures of the building going back to 2009 when it was still substantially intect - although obviously disused...

Cheers Peter. I talked to my brothers about it today - They remember it as also being used as a scout hut in the 1960s and early 70s. - It may be that the Sunday school & scouts were linked since they remember the Akela of the scout group being also being a Vicar - Not sure if he was Vicar of St Michaels. Thanks Dinger- That's exactly how I remembered it.
