Tanning required a number of occupations such as Bark Peelers (both men and women) as shown in the articles below .

The compounds responsible for the tanning, which preserves the leather, are polyphenolics. Incidentally, it has been claimed that these are also responsible for the features in real ale, that are preferred by many. but are lower in more industrialised processes
