Bare Fist Boxers

Catsclaws

master brummie
Hi can anyone out there find anything about a guy called Chaney Weston .. By all accounts in my family he was the last of the great Bare fist boxing Champs. He was my mums greatgrandad.
I wondered if there was anything about him .. mum said that there had been a piece written about him in the Birmingham post years ago .
best wishes Jean

Hi Jean,
I was also looking for information on the bare knuckle fighters. My cousin's great grandfather was Jimmy the Finisher, who used to bare knuckle fight in the Bull Ring. But I can't find anything on him either.

Hehhe alf you never know .. but I know his granson was a very tuff guy too .. my uncle Joe Weston was an RSM in the Army in the war and he was a very scarey bloke too :)

Most RSMs were scary when I was in the Army but Pussy Cats when off Duty well the one's we had.

Yeah Alf My uncle joe was just that .. he married an indian lady who was very well to do and she was a nurse .. well teatimes were so funny with him as he used to take his teeth out at the tee table and put them around his lettuce sandwich to make her cross and us kids laugh heheh
awee good memeroies keeps our families alive eh :)

I knew a lad in the Army that rather than let you pinch a Chip off his plate in the NAFFI would put his dentures on top of them. Couldn't say on here what else he did to stop you.

Jean,
Jimmy the Finisher was born in 1829. So if your Chaney was about the same time, we'll just imagine that they did fight each over. But who won the match, Chaney or the Finisher?
All the best Ann

I can see it now in my head .. in the bull ring . What a fight eh :) I think tho that Chaney was much later than him because mum said it was in the newspaper that he was the last of thebarefist fighters. Perhaps they did fight and he was the young upstart taking on the old champ eh :)
Kind regards Jean xxx

He he Alf there were realy characters then .. But I suppose you had to keep your chin up and have a laugh . I am first generation out of my family to have gone to grammer school . and then as we like you lot were working class people and mum had 5 kids. Dad worked at the morris commercial after the army. Any how the point I am making is that I went into teaching .. I can honestly say that Birmingham council really helped me with grants and stuff and with my hard work I got to be able to teach . Now I have never changed my ways and am still a down to earth brummy . However I still get hurt cos people still look down their nose at me at school and take the mick out of my accent . Its aweful . I have had 30 years of this treatment . This is by the by .. just swapping stories like this makes me realize that it is me that is normal and them that are snobs :)
Thanks Alf keep em coming .
Jean xx

Jean,
Well I think Chaney and Jimmy's fight ended in a draw. If my memory serves me right. Fair enough Cheney took it easy with the old fella. You might even say Chaney threw the fight. But it was most definately a draw.

All the best Ann
