Hi, I’m hoping some local knowledge might help.

I’m researching a family photo from around 1905 of a couple, the man is named on the back as Stanley BRINTON; this is the name assumed by Sydney Vaughan BARBER after he deserted his wife sometime around 1900 and resurfaced in Australia.

Sydney Vaughan BARBER, born 1866 Handsworth, Staffordshire, was a solicitor in Birmingham.

In 1893 he married Kate Madeleine GREEN, St George's Church, Edgebaston. Divorce papers show that by 1904 he was living in Australia under the alias Stanley BRINTON.

Also marrying in 1893 were his brother, William Henry Barber, to Martha Constance Hattie Onions (Barber Institute founders) and his sister Ada Beatrice Barber to Walter Thomas Bantock.

Sydney/Stanley married twice more in Australia (Evelyn Irene Hammond - 1910) and (Ella Goodman - 1935), and died 1950, Sydney, Australia. It's possible that he met Evelyn Hammond in the UK - she is the one whose history I'm trying to piece together, though its proving difficult as she probably used an alias as well.

Were there any local newspaper mentions of him around the time he disappeared circa 1900?

Are there any other photos of him, maybe from his or his siblings’ weddings? This would help to confirm his identity and make sure I’m on the right track. I have contacted the Barber Institute, who provided a photo of his brother but did not have any of Sydney Vaughan.

hi M we have some pretty good researchers on this forum who will be happy to help so hopefully you will get some response...i dont have access at the min to the british newspaper archives which are online but maybe someone who does will do a search for you...

Hi MWS, thanks for the quick reply

I'm fairly sure that's her on the passenger list as it also mentions S. Brinton as her husband, but I think they may have been living apart by then. She was travelling with the Eytons at the time, possibly as a carer for Mrs Eyton. It actually lists her birth place on the next page as Surrey, England, which agrees with what shows on her death and marriage transcriptions, but I suspect wasn't true.

The death transcription has her father as (no given name) Aveling, solicitor, and mother not recorded, whereas the marriage transcription has the parents as William Hoadley BAYLEY, Solicitor, deceased; Elizabeth ALERTON.

My suspicions are that Evelyn's details were falsified at marriage for some reason, and then Sydney/Stanley couldn't recall them as the informant when she died.

Thanks lyn - I have tried the british newspaper archives without luck so far, but I do find them difficult to use and I'm not sure how good their coverage is

Just adding the marriage and death transcriptions in case there is something of relevance, but as mentioned, I don't think the details for Evelyn are accurate and may be red herrings. Its possible she was never in the UK.

From the research I've been doing, its likely her unmarried parents were Charles BAYLEY and Bridget Elizabeth MURPHY and she was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1871. She is at an industrial school until around 16 years of age, where she went by the name of Eva or Eveline MURPHY. The next trace of her is the photo of her, "Auntie Eva", with Stanley Brinton in around 1905

Martha Barber, wife of Sir Henry Barber, when she died in 1933, left a 500 a year annuity to her brother in law Sidney Vaughan Barber, and on his decease 250 a year to Ella Goodman!
 
Thank you for this new piece of information! I've only just now revisited this post, so apologies for not replying sooner.

Updates: I have found one reference to his disappearance in the Yorkshire Evening Post October 4 1899 "Mr. Sydney Vaughton Barber, a young solicitor practising in Birmingham, has disappeared from home"

I have also obtained a photo from the wedding of his sister, Ada Beatrice Barber to Walter Thomas Bantock in 1893 that he is included in. I would still be interested in seeing photos of the 1893 weddings of William Henry Barber to Martha Constance Hattie Onions and Sydney Vaughan Barber to Kate Madeleine Green if anyone comes across them.
