the astoria pic house...little bit of a quiz here folks..can anyone name the coffee house that was just along there...

Lyn, that brings back memories, wondering whether to go to the Aston Cross or Astoria, or maybe a walk up Victoria Road and go to the "Vic" instead, depending what was on of course. If I was flush (not very often) I could get on a tram and go to the Gaumount or Odeon or maybe the West End. Happy days. Eric

ahh there you are eric...hope you had a good holiday...i like that pic too and pleased that it brings back so many memories for you...:)

well done ray..jelfs coffee house is correct...:)

hi john..according to the write up next door but one to the astoria was woolies and just beyond that was jelfs...this is going towards aston cross..

lyn

Between Jelf's and the Astoria, was Shields the pawnbroker and Woolies.
There was a couple more shops but I don't remember them, bought a fret saw from that Woolies...my wife still uses it in her model house making.

Jelfs it is just passed the Municipal Bank on the corner of Rocky Lane Jelfs also had a cafe in Park Lane just over the road from the fish & chip shop & up from Boots Chemist.

I could sit and listen to you folks talking about all these shops, cafes, and picture houses all night. Although Aston was a big part of my life, unfortunately, my memory decides to close down when it comes to things like this. Its just great that so many people still do remember, and post their thoughts on here. Keep it up. Barry.

i agree with you totally barry...cant get enough of the stories....this is one of the main reasons why i set a lot of store on posting pics...im sure they jog the memory and things we thought were long since gone and forgotton come back to the surface of our minds...

lyn:):)

Was there a Peacocks or House that Jack Built somewhere on Aston Cross, I'm afraid my memory is like Bazzm - fading !! I know there was a George Mason because my Wife (then my girl friend) worked there and I met her from work when I was on leave, and possibly a Home and Colonial next dooe ??? Eric

There was a George Mason in Erdington.Mum used to leave her book with her list of shopping and it would be delivered by a boy on a bike....Tesco thought home deliveries was new!

hi eric..there was a house that jack built on the high st just down from the bartons arms pub...

lyn..

Beat me to it Ray:) yes Lyn we loved our House That Jack Built:redface:

Was it near the Astoria which was the Theatre Royal (Live Theatre) till 1927

Does anyone remember the Glass Canopy that covered the pavement utside the Astoria Cnema but was demolished during WW2 after a bomb exploded in Aston road right outside the theatre, it also badly damaged the "Travellers Rest" opposite, by the way I was always told as a child that the 'Astoria' was originally an Opera House, the stage being so deep when it became a Cinema it allowed 'Back Projection.

hi ya ray..thats what i said...well i think i did...:D house that jack built was on the high street just down from the bartons arms pub...sorry i did forget to say newtown row....:rolleyes:lyn....

On 23rd of September 1892 an agreement was signed between George and Robert Hall to erect a theatre on this site. This was built and opened Monday 7th August 1893 at a cost of £6,500
Sold in 1894 to Charles Barnard with extensive refurbishment. General manager E Hewston, acting manager F Whitttles. Refurbished again in 1912 at a cost of £7,000 with a seating capacity of 2000.
This closed in 1926 and opened 12th December 1927, as the Astoria Cinema, seating capacity 1,194. The Astoria closed its doors on 26th November 1955.

G'day Lyn,I always thought the "Bartons" was the start of Newtown Row,John has obviously done his reasearch, and the address of T.H.T.J.B. is clearly in the high St.I was very suprised.:confused2:
Oh, yes it is The Dog And Duck, had many a pint in there thinking I was in Newtown Row,been around the world a bit since then...don't know how I found my way...I was even lost in my own backyard.
Think I shall say I was never lost...just confused.
