Aston Tavern 1970-71 and Beggar's Bush 71-75

Brummie babby
I'm writing on behalf of my nan Shirley Hare (previously Shirley Cooley). Her and my grandad John David Hare were the publicans of the Aston Tavern in 1970-71 and then of the Beggar's Bush. I've been trying to find news articles and pictures for a present to her but had no luck so far. Would be over the moon if anyone remembers them or those pubs around those times

I did a painting of that pub some years ago for the owner. It has sad memories for me, we lived round the corner in Queens Rd and it was my Dad's local and he had a heart attack on leaving and died, this was many years ago when Pat Collins Onion Fair visited twice a year at the 'Tip' next door. This was well before the pub was left derelict and restored to its present appearance EricAston Tavern 2015.jpg

Shirley , Welcome to the forum , I remember The Aston Tavern very well though a little later , my wife and I used to take our three youngsters there when they were young I'd be talking about 1978/79. This would be on a Sunday evening around 7.30pm , sitting out the back not a care in the world . After a couple of drinks it would be off back home to get ready for work and the week ahead . That little bit of relaxation on Sunday evening was just the job ,but came and went too quick , still same again next week weather permitting .

And this thread might give useful background information on the Beggars Bush.

Thank you so much! Both my nan and my mum said they remembered being there whilst the roundabout was still there! Got them both emotional!

Aww it’s so nice to hear everyone’s memories of a place so important in our families history

My grandad John David Hare died of a heart attack in 1974 at the Beggar’s Bush. Afterwards, they said my nan would have to leave as she was a widow but she made so much money for them that they allowed her to stay with my mum and aunt and they even put her name above the door. She put on a night every week where the waitresses would dress up in fancy long dresses and do table service which brought in loads of money! She was a very strong woman
