Hi Everyone
I have started some Family History research and it has been suggested that this forum may be able to help.
My grandfather Morris Edward William Miller was born in Aston in 1889 and family stories have it that he played football for Aston Villa. Searches have shown that it wasn't the First Team but I wonder if it was a less familiar part of AV set up or if it was another team FROM Aston. It may have been a youth team as he was in Egypt before WW1.
Also he appears to have been a good Water Polo player as there is another family story that his name was on a plaque at the swimming baths as a member of a successful team. It is understood that the Swimming Baths were either demolished or greatly refurbished in the 1980's.
Any help or ideas where I may confirm/deny these family stories would be appreciated.
Thanks
Raymond

Hi Alf
Yes indeed you will have seen this request before. It was suggested that my requests from Welcome Forum would be usefully duplicated in the Surnames and Sports as well in case people did not regularly scan Welcome.
Congratulations on your sharp eyes!
Thanks
Raymond

Congratulations on my Glasses and the hours I spend on this great Forum, I was warned but I was weak, anyway someone has to keep the Wimin in order and thats a full Time job.:D

It has Jennyann, and that is sad news for a Villa Fan don't know how many games for Villa I watched him in but it was a lot may he rest in peace:(

That is sad, as I know Brian will be when I tell him. Jimmy lived in the Broadway, round the corner from us when we were first married. In the days when they were real stars, and not the mamby pamby lads some of them are these days. When a charge on the field didn't result in a sending off, and when they drove the same cars as we did.

I'm not talking abut the Villa lads, Alfie.;)

Today is the anniversary 73 Years ago Ted Drake scored 7 Goals against Aston Villa at Villa Park

Proud enough Villa & Football supporter to acknowledge this great feat which has only done once before by Jimmy Ross Preston 1888:)

Well said Alf m8 :) A good sporting man (oops &/or Lady, to be P C);)
will always give credit where it is right to do so,,,
Ted Drake was a brilliant & prolific goalscorer & 7 against the Villa,,,
ooh!! hurts me to say it, but as you rightly say, Good on him :)

I hope the Blues pull their socks up & stay in the Premier, also would
like West Brom to get promotion & Wolves,Cov, Leics,Derby get going
stronger again in the next few years,,,
I am fed up with this "Norf and Souf" teams ruling the roost,
C,mom you men of The Midlands, get back Your reputations,
Cheer(s) Them all on, John Y

Jimmy Dugdale did indeed live in The Broadway, just up the road from where we lived, and my dad knew him well.
Unlike the so-called 'stars' of today, Jimmy would stop and talk to anyone - we often saw him walking home from the Villa after home matches, and he'd tell you how the game went and how he played.

He was the gaffer at The Boar's Head for a time after he retired from football.

Big Gee

Hi guys big big game tomorrow what do think the result will be?............2-1 to the Blues.......:shh:.....Mossy

:) Hi Ray.A few dates for you regarding Aston swimming club. 1895 Aston s.c. 1892 Lozells s.c. Amalgamated in 1933. I can not find anyone of that name in the club honours only GB Olympic and Warwickshire reps. These would have been individual reps but they only list teams and not individual names. Under the water polo section they were ASA Semi Finalists in 1908 1925 1970 and 1973. I am still trying to track Mrs Beaucham down as I know she is still alive and dis have most of the old records. TTFN. Jean. :)

:)Ray. Maybe your grandad was a member of Lozells swimming water polo club and not Aston?. They won the Flying Squadron division in 1908 div 1 1909 div 3. But still can't find any names. Like I said before there's a lovely old phot on the wall of the Dog Pub in Water Orton. Your grandads name wasn't on it. TTFN. Jean.:(
