Rotunda - Dental Hospital - Post and Mail - ? - Lloyd House - ? ? ? ? ? - BT Tower

can someone fill in the gaps please ?

hi mike;
at the start of the railings on the picture directly on the left of those railings you will see the little side rd which was white house street
there is a white hoarding after the row of the old remaining shops and at the end of those row of shops visual in a smaller height is the albion pub on which is the corner of white house street aston o the oppersite side of the road on your right hand of the picture was a company called if i can spell it correctly brandurears and there old factory was up john t west by newtown row palace [ nee bingo hall ] before demo days ;
and hat was the new buildings n your right and just before that one it belong to a jewish family whom i knew and they lived in wellinton rd edgebaston
and it was a big house and they lift next door to the well known carpet and clothes makers in birmingham the plotnecks whom i also knew very well and personaly but the first jewish family its just slip my tonge but that there was there family bussiness they was two brotheres
and it was an expensive place to go it was very expensive for the rich to go and buy there they was importers mainly jewish articles
if you ventured abit more up that new road which is the new road for small brook circus and the chads by pass
the first building if i remember corretly was a company called ETS they dealt with electrical cables and whole salers my oldest brother
was a rep for the company and the second on you left high build was chemistry block for the universary and the second one directory in front was a one time nurses home s or nurses until the great fire of halfords which we all recall was on the opersite side of the fire station many years ago
and after that fire they slowly emptied the nurses block and moved them some where else and eventualy it was sold to the purpose of students first block of accomodation long before they started to build there complex around the quarter
where that white mark on the corner of white house street is it used to be an old news agent s where as a kid i would fetch a tin of snuff for my grand mother or uncle joe whom lived in white house across the rd from a little bakery and afew yards from chinns and three doors from the Lloyds
and as you say the very smal obscure building is the fire station best wishes astonian alan

I remember walking home one night from working in town down that road as the buses had been taken off due to pea soup fog.

hi carolina
yes thats correct it was the plotnecks whom owned allied carpets and they also went into manufacturing of womens clothing
and sales along with there own ware houses of cash and carry ware houseing which was in digbeth
fashion dezigns at expensive prices for the rich whom supplied many out lets in and around the city
they had one shop at five ways
best wishes astonian

Hi Alan,
I think you may have lost your bearings me old mate! The photo is taken looking at the city centre skyline from a point very near to, or at, where C M Powell Brothers Tube Mill once stood and the building at the end on the left is The General Wolffe public house. This is on Aston Road just past the junction with Corporation Street.
The Albion Pub and Whitehouse Street were about a mile or more further away from town, actually on Aston Road North. I trust you will agree after a closer look at Lyn's photo.

Hi Astonian that was a memory from the past you mentioning ETS I had my first job there 1n 1957 as the office junior my brother worked on the sales counter.

Was The Midland Fan company on Aston road?. I think it was on the right going into town from Aston Cross?. Jean.

Hello Dave you,ve got me confused now I too thought it was down by Whitehouse St I think the Flyover to the right is coming down from the newly formed Dartmouth Circus and crossing the Expressway the fork to the left goes up to the other side of the Circus.The distant centre buildings are part of the University + high rise accommodations to the right of these is Maclaren House now on the new Masshouse Lane (was Smallbrook Ringway) further to the right is Lloyd House.If I remember right Corporation St ended at the Junction of Aston St and Aston Rd by the canal. Dek

dek..i will go and check the caption..see if it gives anymore info on the back of the photo..

I remember the shop called The Big Broom. It was on the same side as the ITV studios. I think it was a basic hardware store but not sure what else they sold there. There was a very large broom over the front of the shop if I remember correctly.

O.K. Lyn, (Astoness), Alan (Astonian) and Dek (from Aston!!) from Dave (from Aston too!)
I've been trying for days to get this message and photos onto the Forum regarding Lyn's posted photo.
1. The first photo is Lyn's original. Dek I thinkthe new road sweeping off to the right is the ramp over Corporation Street leading to the Queensway tunnel.
2. On the photo is the General Wolfe, on the corner of Aston Road and Love Lane, I think you can see the building design is a match with the last building on the L.H. side of Lyn's photo.
3. Is a photo looking from the direction of town towards the Albion pub on the corner of Aston Road North and Whitehouse Street. I hope you will agree that the buildings don't match with Lyn's photo (I hope you will agree!!!!).

In the spirit of authenicity I would appreciate your comments once again.

hi dave
first of all yes the second pic is coming from the city looking at the albion andwhite house street
and yes that new start of the road on aston rd north was first started to be dug up by those shops just short of the albion pub ;
and it was of the beginning of the rd that would take you to the st chads under pass and that is long before the dartmouth junction was dezigned and the express way came along there and i have to say dave i can comfidently say that i personaly remember those road barrierrs started in line with the albion pub at the time and just short of the albion pub half of aston rd north was in bits of alll rubble and i also hought at the time how it would have effected the trade of the albion custmers as there was still alot of lunch time trade going on with factory workers
but it still managed to survive for the workers and went strengh to strengh
but as i have said i can comfidently say tat the road eperation of the rd with barriers started at the junction of white house street along he aston rd
if yo was coming from the city that bend coming back was almost over reaching phillips street i cannot b e precise but i do knowthat there wa thejewishfamily ware house and if i remember the other new building loking like you seewould have been powells plating but thenalso that would have been closer to the city infact the secon phase ould have been around the moland stret and where the midland countiesdairy was that where you come to the darthmouth circus but i do know in my mindthat the start there loking at the barierirs oing to the city of that new rd was by the albion
and white house street as it started to raise up and making the st chads queens way tunnel
well dave i will sign off now just loading up my car as i am off to the belfry nownice to hear from you again best wishes alan ; astonian

Hi Dave,if you walked up Aston Rd in the direction shown on picture #1 passed the last building on the left,you would need to walk a further 200 yards plus,then sweep left at Midland Counties dairy towards Gosta Green to get to The General Wolfe.Moss

This is roughly the position that Lyn's photo was taken. between Avenue Rd and Whitehouse Rd on what was then Aston Rd north.

Hi Dave it appears we are all ganging up against you on this one, so much so that I have been out today and taken photos of both locations in b/w to get a better feel(I will have to post them latter as I have to go out) Oh by the way I am not from Aston my roots are Vauxhall my Ex who you knew is though. Dek

Here you are Dave see what you think. This is Aston Rd the Albion is hidden by 20 odd years of tree growth. Dek

Hi All,
Just to let you know that I'm putting a post together to prove I'm right about Lyn's photo (that will of course mean you must be wrong) but I can't say when I will be in a position to post it. In the meantime just practice writing your apologies!!!

hi dave...look forward to reading your post....so glad i only post the piccies lol...

lyn

Thanks for the photo Lyn. Rippingills factory on the left and Albion Pub on the right.
Maybe the "poor misguided people" who identified your photo "incorrrectly" but unintentionally, can see that the buildings and The Albion pub are not the ones featured in that first photo? Come on guys, don't make me prove it to you beyond a doubt. You can see a slight curve in the road and if you can remember there was another "steady" curve to the left before Midland Counties dairy. There is no chance of seeing the city skyline from a point a little distance from The Albion. Surely you can see that Lyn's original photo is taken about halfway between the dairy and Love Lane. The pub is The General Wolfe. Lyn's latest photo is more than a mile further away from town AND please remember - at the bottom of an incline (can't call it a hill as it was a steady rise from Aston Brook to the dairy).
So have I converted anybody yet or are you more confused than ever?
By the way Lyn, there are a number of photos posted on the forum of the Albion pub and Aston Road North and I would say this is the clearest of them all. Thanks again for posting it. I believe it willl help my cause in identifying your original photo!

Losing at Crewe doesn't help make me happy either!!!!!!!

hi dave..i wondered what pub that was in my last pic...still looking for any bracebridge st pics for you...

lyn

HI DAVE ;
I still have no deludion on what i have stated if you lok at your pic again and count the third lamp post on the left of the pic;
that was the whits space was in fact whitehouse street and the first section of the demo of the aston rd
ripping up all the mains from the old building an the barrirers on the rdif you look closelyyou will see the littleexit of the rd ; being white house street and being the albion pub i can recalling the scene as i passed at that period of time being on the bus
and looking at the pub and white hoouse street and nans old house and thinking they aint gonna touch the pub andtold myselfthat if if ever came up on subject i can recall the pub by counting those barriers from the pub as a land mark on the days they built the beginningof the aston rd north
changings the top end had not been started by then ; meaning the darthmouth ring rd ; up by midland dairyies ;
the second high building on your left was the first to be built in the distance ;years before the first building you see
which wasby the ring rd
looking at the last pic the rd was not really curved at all and it was pointing towards the aston cross
and the pub lynnas put is the albion pub on the corner of white house street and the church tower is st mary church and school on the corner of the avenue rd which when you turned into to you up to the gas works and where we all lined up with our push chairs and barrows to get your coal and coke just after the war have a good day dave best wishes alan ;; astonian
change ;

hi stith
yes a good clear picture of the rd and with that view of the metal post in the middle of the rd and the zebra crossing there
tells me you are correct and st marys church and scholl was slap bang in the middle of the crossing if you crossed over
as the church would have been on the left and the st mary school was along side it and as you jus walked into the avenue
old mr fletchers house [ senior mr fletchers ] whom was the family member of fletchers auto on darthmoth street years ago ;
was in he first batches of houses yu o came to facing the church

and school and he started by putting orange boxes out side is house
with the old spare head lamps from the old cars era and wires and bits and bobs for 2/6d for years
my old grand father whom started up in bussiness the same years said he wa a robber and he would not buy from him at those prices
best wishes astonian
