A delightful and most interesting set of old 'photos. I did enjoy looking at them. Many thanks for posting them.
I never served with horses but some younger wags in my service days were quite convinced that I did. I did just manage the older style open engines where one strapped oneself to the brass side rails and held on for dear life. :excitement:

Thanks for the pics, my son is keen on becoming a fireman, albeit he wants to be a New York one - and he loves fire engine pics of ny sort.

What fantastic photo's Two's and thanks for posting them for us. My granddaughter when she was little said she wanted to be a fire fighter and rescue all the dead people.

Aston Fire Brigade Pictures

This is previously posted picture #3 of Aston Fire Brigade
I came across a local newspaper article that named 2 of the Officers in this picture.
  • 2nd from the right is Archibald J Treadaway - he was Assistant Superintendent of Aston Fire Brigade - records show that he was born in 1883 in Aston.
  • 3rd from the right is his Father - also named Archibald J Treadaway - he was Chief Superintendent of Aston Fire Brigade - records show that he was born 1848 in Cambridgeshire.
The 1903 Kelly's Directory of Birmingham gives Archibald J Treadaway (Snr) job title as Superintendent of nightsoil department & captain of Fire Brigade to the Aston Manor Urban District Council, Chester Street Wharf.
The date of the photograph would probably be c 1910 (looking at the age of the son in the photo)
The 2 men are also in previously uploaded photo #7 - Archibald J Treadaway (jnr) is in the front row centre and his father Archibald J Treadaway (snr) in behind his son - 5th from the right on the centre row.

Re: Aston Fire Brigade - Pictures - Names to faces

Fabulous set of pictures. Thanks for sharing two.

Two, I have not been on this site for a long time as nobody seemwd to have any thing to add. What a surprise to see the black and white (Snowy and Blacky) on the left hand side of the picture, I have a photo of the pair of them putting their heads through the halters when the bell rang to let them know that they would be attending a fire.
My Grandfather is standing watching them do this as a demonstration for the camera and on the opposite side was the fire chief who is sitting with the reigns and in the light coloured trousers. I have other pictures of the brigade taken in 1909. My Grandfather left there to take up the post of Fire Chiet of Bartley Green in 1911.

Re: Aston Fire Brigade - Turn of the Century - A few more Pictures

Two, I have just scrolled down the page and what do I see, my Grandfather on the right of your second picture. Where the heck did you get these pictures. I did not think any one alive would know any of these firemen.

Re: Aston Fire Brigade - Turn of the Century - A few more Pictures

Keith the photo number two down is slightly different to the one I have as Snowy has put his head through the halter and is one step nearer the camera. Unusual as I did not think they could take photo's that quickly in those days. If you want I copy these photo's I live in Olton. Pipone on this site is writing a book about the Aston Fire Brigade.

Here is another photo taken at Aston fire station while it was at Chester Street, pre 1924. Would not hav eliked to hav ebeen the person (Pompei?) being lowered. Station marked in red on the 1902 map below

Don't know about the accuracy of this photo description, but it claims to be Aston Manor steam fire engine. It does look like it says Aston Manor behind the men in the photo. I can also see 1882 on the engine. The caption description also mentions "John Inshaw and men". Maybe that means something to our experts. An interesting photo, hopefully with a story to tell.

Also, one Trade Directory lists Inshaw's factory premises as at Morville Street (Mechanical Engineers).

The 1882 Kellys gives Inshaw , engineer as at 188 Lichfield Road, but John Inshaw & Sons, paper manufacturer and engineers as at cheston Road. Presumably (?) this might be the Aston Paper mills shown on the 1886 map below.

So Inshaws 'Morville Street works' as listed in another trade directory must mean his 'works' was based at the Steam Clock pub/music hall. I believe he developed the steam clock for the pub. Could this be the location in the photo post #16?

The photo in post #16 does have the words Aston Manor painted upon them. Ladywood, Morville Street, was some distance away.
that is what i thought alan..as its painted aston manor on the gates the photo must have been taken at the lichfield road works which came under aston manor...
