ASTON BROOK TAVERN
Does anyone have any information or photos of this pub?
My father lived there as a young boy when it was no longer a pub. He told me that all the woodwork for the bar etc was still there. The windows on the doors still had the name etched on and at that time still looked like a pub.Several families were sharing this building and my fathers family had 2 rooms downstairs including the bar.
We (Dad and I) discovered this photo by chance amongst my many Bham photos, and Dad said straight away that it was the pub in question.
I do have some information from the census when someone called Jarrett was the Landlord. I would Thomas St Powell St.JPGlove to know more
regards
Amanda

Hi I wondered if anyone knows anything about the Aston Brook Tavern, my great great grandfather was the landlord around end of 1800s to 1905. Many thanks.

If you google "pubwiki" and when you are on the website click Warwickshire, then Birmingham, then A - you will find a list of all pubs beginning with the letter A. Some of the landlords for the Aston Brook Tavvern are listed.

William.

Aston Brook Tavern was no 23 Powell St. Details I have are below. Red items are census and definitely correct year. Other items from directories and , as year is publication year, may be year before

For 1861-68, no numbering is given, but as in every listing only one beerhouse is listed in the street it is reasonable to assume that this was no 23

No beerhouse listed in Powell St in 1885

1861 census George Pugh

1861-1868 George Pugh

1871 census Annie Wheeler

1872 -1888 William Cooper

1890 Alexander William Whiteway

1891 census Edward Jarratt

1892- 1910 Edward Jarratt

1901 census Edward Jarratt

1910-1924 Walter White

1932 Mrs Annie Adelaide Walters

1932. No 23 is not listed, but Annie Walters has taken over the off licence at no 17 Powell St, and in 1936 Charles Spencer has no 23 but is now dining rooms.

That's an interesting coincidence, my Grandad was a Charles Spencer from Aston and he did catering for a boxing club during a period when he couldn't get any other sort of work.
Unfortunately I never asked my Dad details of whereabouts it was etc - probably a different person anyway!

Thanks for that William. My great great grandfather was Edward Jarrett listed on that site.

Furthe information gleaned from newspapers:
The Aston Brook tavern was in existence earlier than in the list above, as an advert selling the leasehold building was published in October 1853. It was probably not listed in 1855 as it was in Aston.

Hannah Marie Wheeler, landlady, is fined in 1871. I assume this is the same as the Annie Wheeler in the census

William Whiteway was made bankrupt, because of previous debts, but still a manager there in May 1889

ted Jarratt was an active member of the anti=Swearing Society, which held its meetings at the pub
