Aston Brook revealed during 2008?

can this be the Aston Brook culvert uncovered by demolition 2008 the photogrphs were taken in Porchester Street juxta the old Furnace Lane the culvert appears to be comeing from where I am standing, looking at the culvert it goes straight for a few yards and then turns to the right if you look at the maps on the brook thread the culvert is in the right place,
unable to get better pictures not allowed in because of health and safety will try again next week I have notified the archilogical people at Birmingham university and also I was on Carl's radio show today

John, I am suprised no one has looked into this from a historical point. Usually when these things are uncoverd the archiologists are all over the site.:( Well done for taking the photo's I know this must have been difficult for you.

hi all. popped down yesterday before i went to the jewellery quarter. managed to get a few photos. fasinating to see the old culverts. i am so pleased that at least a couple of the buildings are going to be preserved. far to much of our history has been raised to the ground. wales.

Aston Brook revealed during 2008

I have high lighted the culvert (Aston Brook) to plot it's course through the martindale factory (Crocodile Works) were it enters in Porchester Street is were I photographed the opening to the culvert this will give you some idea of it's lay out

Thanks John the map has made it much clearer to understand exactly where it is.

aston brook

will try to post the pictures i took the other day. never tried it before so i hope you will all be patient. wales

I used to visit Ralph Martindale (Crocodile Works) on business. They made machetes for third-world countries, and have now moved to Willenhall. The old Alma Street/Summer Lane works was a pretty awful place...

Well done John, I hadn't read the paper, and would have missed it had you not posted it on here.

Peter. Did you ever go along that culvert that ran under Lawley Street and either the Railway goods yard or Landor Street? I could never have attempted it even with the brightest lamp possible, it was very large but I think that I would have had claustrophobia. I went into it about 10 yards or so ( with no light ) and I soon came out again. Even with a light I would worry about whats in the Dark part behind me or in front of me.

That is an amazing picture under Hockley Brook/Aston Brook. Thanks for all the input to this thread I have and still am enjoying it no end.:)

Great photograph Pete. Just think...if it wasn't for this Forum we'd never know or even think about stuff like this. Amazing and I wish I was young enough and agile enough to go down there.
My Uncle worked down the sewers in Brum. Said he'd spent most of his life shovelling sh*t.

re brook

CHARLIE.he is a man after me,i am always in the s**t,
since bryants come into our road and dug it up i have had a thing about
underground places,i was only a kid,but they gave me a job making tea
for the gangs.great this give me acsess to the workings,i went down the
brook with them, and also along the sewer network.the main sewer was about 7ft wide and went up to hockley.at the week end me and my mate
would walk right along it.it was very dark and smelly.

Super photograph

That's a super photograph, worthy of an exhibition...Cat:)

Peter. That culvert that run under Lawley Street I often tried to imagine where it went to, now thinking about it would it have came out into the open culvert that ran across the bottom of Duddeston Mill Road towards Saltley ?
Another question is the River ? Rea part of the open sewer system.

re rea

GER22VAN,high ernie.yes i always intended to go along the moonwalker. but never did.where it went under ground was a world of its own. pete

Exhibit

Peter, Do you exhibit your work,? if not you really ought to...Cat:)

Peter. Good for you, at our time of life we should be doing the things we enjoy. Another final point, you said that you like to watch the waves on the beach. Not tomorrow Peter, but if so, only from a very safe distances.

re astonbrook

ernie.the term moonwalk is used to discribe the movement of your legs
when you walk or try to walk along the culvert.
CATKIN. a fellow drain explorer took the pic not i. pete

Peter. Just been looking on Utube to see how to Moonwalk. I think that I would be walking like one of those bow legged bronco busters in I went down those tunnels.
While I am here I would like to say that I have always marveled at Victorian Engineering whether it is canals, Bridges, Viaducts and machines.

re aston brook

ernie.it is more like walking on a ice ring wearing clogs. pete

Peter. I guess I cannot imagine walking on an ice rink wearing clogs, I am sure I would still be like a bow legged bronco buster without my horse.
Still I would rather do that than be an " Ice Road Trucker".
