Aston, Birmingham in late 1800s

Hello. I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I am Australian and know nothing about Aston which is where my grandfather was born. In particular I am looking for an overview of what type of place it was (size, relationship to Manchester and other towns nearby, working class/poor/crime, the religious institutions etc.). Im looking for an informative rather than an academic treatise.

Many thanks in advance.
Murray (Canberra, Australia)

Aston (a suburb of Birmingham) is about 80 miles from.Manchester and would not normally consider itself connected.
Birmingham is a totally different city.
Perhaps if you can give us an address and/or name for your grandfather we can give you more precise information.
In the meantime if you use our search facility (magnifying glass top right) you will find a number of threads about Aston and different streets/businesses.

Having thought about this - wondering if there has been a mistranscription somewhere as there is an ASHTON in Manchester as opposed to ASTON in Birmingham.
It might help if you are able to post a scan/pic of the reference.

Many thanks. as for its connection to Birmingham, Ive been guided by documentation (BDM etc) that connect Aston with Birmingham. I assume would have been/is the nearest major town/city where such documents would have been registered.

hi murray as janice has said can you provide us with you grandfathers name and date of birth who he married etc.. we cant really help you unless we have more info from you....thanks

Birmingham is the second largest city and has its own register Office.
Not connected for admin to Manchester at all

Hi all. Grandfather was Edgar Howard Whitehouse (B 27 Aug 1870) to Job and Caroline Amelia Atkins. They lived at Herbert Road and later in Cato Street. His younger brother was Silvester Whitehouse who became a missionary and was killed in China during the Boxer Rebellion. I have quite a lot of evidence about his life but as I described in my OP, I'm now seeking info about the type of life he was born into. Any info would be appreciated. Since posting here, Ive also discovered the "placed based" forum and am wondering if I should post there as well or instead. Please advise. :)

click on link below to take you to our cato st thread which you may find interesting as it has lots of old photos of the street before demo..sadly the area had quite bad housing conditions...i also noticed on the 1871 and 1881 census records caroline is down as married but there is no sign of husband job...maybe he worked away from home i have also noticed that in 2023 a member posted a photo of no 85 cato st but not sure if you saw it..link below
