P1010794.JPGMy grandfather, William Farmer, lived in Whitehouse Street, Aston and joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in the Great War. He was in the infantry, as a rifleman, and went "over the top" at the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915 and the Battle of Loos in September 1915. Sadly, he was killed in action in April 1916 near Arras. He is on the Roll of Honour in the Hall of Memory, Birmingham. He is also on the Roll of Honour in a chapel dedicated to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) at Winchester Cathedral. The KRRC was based at Winchester. He does not have a gravestone but his name is inscribed on the Arras Memorial, France. His widow also received a standard letter of sympathy from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Neville Chamberlain. It is printed WAR 1915, but we know that he was killed in 1916. I don't have the original but attach a photo. I was not aware that relatives had to pay in order to get a name commemorated. Dave
