Has anybody out there got any photographs of the Hamlet,i have been told that it as been demolished i was in there on the opening night 1964 also i bet Cromwell or Kandor can tell me the exact date it opened.
I think at the time it was the best pub in the area people used to get dressed up at week ends to drink in the lounge.

The Riggy Family used the bar and had a good sing along to at the time the latest songs Beatles,Searchers,Kinks ect;Billy Riggy was a larger than life character and always started the singing, sadly he passed away some years ago.we also went swimming at woodcock on a Sunday morning with them and other people was any else on here with us aswell.

Happy Days Maurice

Hi Mossy,

I knew it was 1964 but the actual date it opened is lost to me, besides, I was only 12 and too young to drink anyway.
I used it on and off for 3 years, it was my first 'Local'
I played darts there 4/5 times a week before I made the usual progression to Town pubs.
The Ashted Hamlet saw me get my first proper girlfriends and even better, my first 180 at darts..laughs
I remember a really pretty Barmaid called Kay who worked there, fact is, she was so pretty no one ever asked her out in case of rejection..step forward Kandor...
To my amazement she said 'Yes' and I can remember some wonderful times with her, I also recall one very embarrassing night when on a night off for Kay we decided to go up to Bogarts in New St where I drank about 6 pints or Dortmunder Lager, then we moved on to the old pub she used to work in called 'The Windmill'
I tried to match her drink for drink, Brandy, Whisky, Rum and Vodka...I remember sitting on a tall bar stool talking to her when very, very slowly I just tilted backwards and landed flat on my back totally paralytic..
It was a Monday night and I vaguely remember Kay putting me in a taxi and my next memory is waking up Wednesday..Tuesday had gone forever.
I must have amused her though as we went out a few times afterwards.
The Hamlet was the Home of 'Ten pence Ted'..I've written about him elsewhere, my Dad drank in there too and I also met Gloria Mann..
And THAT really isn't a story for here..
It declined badly in it's later years, you were reduced to buying your beer in Cans and only then 'Carling black label'
I had a few fights there and I discovered I was quite articulate in the language of violence..happily those days are behind me.
I remember my old friend Joey and I also recall one of the true Gentlemen I've met in life..he was 'Billy Riggy' a man with a heart as big as his body..what a fine and lovely person he was..
I used to bath every night back then..(trust me, a rare thing in Nechells) and I used to soak myself in 'US' deodorant..Billy used to wait for me to come in and chase me round the pub asking for a kiss...what a truly lovely guy he was..we lost him way too soon.
Great days indeed.
And yes, The Hamlet was demolished a few weeks ago..
