I believe my father was an ARP warden. If anyone comes across a Thomas Day in the records I'd be very interested and grateful for the information. Thanks!

Thanks for looking Maz and Vivienne. My father was 21 in 1939 and his parents were Thomas and Sybil so that's not him unfortunately.
I vaguely remember my mum saying he had been a fire watcher. Is that the same as a warden?

As I understand it John, Fire Watchers kept a look-out for incendary/fire bombs, extinguished fires, that sort of thing (but I'm no expert !). Wardens were concerned with making sure the public were safe. What's remarkable about all these roles is how exposed to danger, men and women who volunteered were in WW2. You have to admire their efforts and bravery.

My father Wilfred Barr was a fire watchman not only local but at his works too, we lived in Copeley street Aston and Burlington st School was their HQ s he would tell my brother and l some horrible storys of what he was exposed too and would get very emotional.

Thanks for that Brenda. I'm starting an alphabetical list recognising those who acted as ARP fire watchmen during WW2. The list below will be updated with names as they're notified to us.

ARP Fire Watchers were civilian volunteers who scanned urban areas for incendiary bombs during WW2. They identified, minimised and extinguished small fires and helped coordinate rescue efforts.

my uncle samuel clamp was a fire watcher for

he had a used burned out shell in his shed that landed on the roof,we would get it out and look at it when we visited him and aunty
